Recommendations for routers to work with FTTC

My exchange is supposed to be getting FTTC switched on at the end of 2012 (31 Dec I've been told by BT is the planned date) and I wondered if anyone here had any recommendations for a good basic router to use with the new setup. My ISP (ICUK) have some helpful info on their website but any thoughts from experienced users here would be most welcome also. We haven't got lots of devices to connect - three or four at most and all but two are wireless - so we don't need a mega-port router.

Many thanks.

As recommended by Zen, I got the Netgear WNR2200. 4 Ethernet ports and wireless. Can't complain for £50 rrp but I think PC World were doing an online discount recently.

I'd second the TD-W8960N. However your choice does depend on cost and what you want the router to do as others have more advanced features (3G support, media server, print server etc.) that you may or may not want / need.

IMO you should make sure that the router supports Gigabit Ethernet and strong wifi, as those are usually good indications of hardware that can cope with superfast connectivity and future needs.

Many thanks for the responses and helpful thoughts. Setting aside the TD-W8960N, if it doesn't have the right connectivity, are any others someone's favourite FTTC-capable router? I will certainly look at the Netgear WNR2200 in the meantime.

Err the W8960N is capable of operating just as a router (though obviously the Modem part of it will be unless with FTTC its only an ADSL/2+ modem in it). It will support PPPoA, PPPoE, IPoE, Bridge and IPoA modes. (I believe PPPoE is used on BT FTTC). You can even use it as a router only with Virgin connections.

In this instance though i would not recommend that model and would look at others in the TPLink range if you are on a budget. Mainly because all the LAN ports on the 8960N are only 100Mbps rated, id personally want a Gigabit router with any new Fibre based product.

It's also worth remembering that UK FTTC connections, which run over BT's network, also come with an Openreach VDSL modem so you don't technically need VDSL support in the router itself but it is cleaner if you can get that.

If they want an all in one VDSL modem and router device theres a few choices
Draytek Vigor 2750 or 2850 around £160
Fritzbox 7390 around £200+ (You get a heck of alot though for that money including 4x gigabit ports and 3 FON ports)

I believe Buffalo, Billion and Zyxel also do combined VDSL Modem/routers now, though the exact model numbers escape me. Again expect prices to be around £100 or higher.

If they want something made by TPLINK which is also cheap BUT ONLY A ROUTER (IE will still need to use the BT FTTC modem, this will basically act like BTs homehub) then the TL-WR2543ND from them looks like a good solution. Its Dual Band Wireless, has 4x LAN gigabit ports a USB (for media, printer sharing etc) Basic parental controls and basic QOS controls.... All for around £40-55 :)
