Redten Internet

I've been with AOL for years and have just signed up with a new ISP called Redten. There doesnt seem to be anything on forums about them apart from old stuff.

I just want to say AOL and everyone else is crap. My sister is with Tiscali and she constantly has problems too and is moving to RedTen. With our 8mb line we are getting a free laptop and PC for £24.99 a month.

I'm shocked that an ISP with that kind of offer isnt talked about more on forums. What I seem to be finding is old problems their parent company have had and nothing about the new owners and relaunch of the company and its great offers.

The standard Redten Internet contract runs for three years.

If you cancel before the 3 years are up they want the PC back as you got it or they debit you the full value of the PC..

i cant copy and paste their contract here so i wont bother with the other parts that bear close reading.

Bottom line, impo, im glad you are happy! Thats the important part.

However, signing a THREE year contract with a company in the internet business is a LONG time.. (and the laptop is FAR from being state of the art, so i cant imagine the PC is either)

Interesting first post Emmat as an ISPreview site we do tend to try to advice against long contracts as the service tends to deteriot over a period of time. With short contract you can move on if this happens sadly 3 years is a long time for a service like INternet and the computer would be past it's best within the first 6months.

Indeed, 3 years is a very long time for an ISP contract.

The fact you have a PC also worries me.

Basically, this means if you get shoddy service, you cannot move unless you pay the price of the PC (and any other fees you might incur for ending it early). The price of the PC might well be well over what its worth, depending what they paid for it.

Would certainly be worth looking into what it involves by giving the PC back if you want to end it early. There is probably many criteria, and you might not even have the option after a certain time.

Personally I wouldnt touch a long contract with tie ins with a barge pole, but some are braver than I.

The point I'd make is the laptop and destop PC is not free, I don't think even redten are claiming that. You are effectively buying a budget low spec laptop and PC on hire purchase along with low cost internet access and a very long contract.

If you compare the price of their packages it looks as if the internet access makes up very roughly £6.99 of your subs, the PC is roughly £6 and the laptop £11.

As the saying goes, you only get what you pay for. But I suppose it will appeal to some who just use the internet (and their PC) for email and occassional browsing.

Some reasons I wouldn't touch this, in order of importance (in my opinion)

  • 3 year contract - no chance
  • I've never heard of them, and for me, reputation is important
  • As far as I can tell, the cancellation charges within the first 3 years are not specified in their T&Cs. So theoretically, if you aren't happy and cancel after 6 months (say), you could have to pay the remaining 30 months off (£750), plus pay to return the PC/laptop.

There is a line which says something like "you have no right of cancellation", in which case they would be within their rights to expect full payment of the remainder of the contract
  • I don't need a PC or laptop, especially ones as poorly spec'd as these. They aren't terrible specs right now, but after a year or so they will be stone-age. My PC is a similar spec to the free one - I have owned it for over 2 years, and it wasn't new when I bought it (it was refurbed)
[li]By my reading, the PC/laptop will only be sent AFTER the activation date, so delays in delivering the PC will mean you pay for a connection you can't use (unless yopu have your own PC, of course
  • The FUP is very vague regarding caps etc, but at least it is honest about traffic shaping P2P
  • I get up to 24mb for the same price, without the ridiculously long contract (and without the PC, which is irrelevant for me anyway)

Of course, if you end up being happy with redten for 36 months, then you are onto a winner - £900 for good Internet access and a PC as well as a laptop (however cack they are) is undoubtedly good value.

But 3 years is an awfully long time, and it is VERY common for previously good ISPs to quickly become bad ISPs.

I just want to say AOL and everyone else is crap.

You only mention experience with AOL and Tiscali - that hardly gives you the expertise to make such a sweeping statement about "everyone else".

I wouldn't touch either Itscrapi or Almost On Line (or any of the other top 5 or 6 providers either), but there are plenty of smaller companies that provide a quality service without thye long contract
