Removing the SOGEA cable

So I had Openreach FTTP installed today (at last). The work was done by Circet with a fibre run from a pole, and once they were done I asked what would happen to the now unused copper cable.

The guy said "Just cut it down yourself at the house end then cut it off the pole."

This can't be true? Is this really what I should do?

you can do it if you want, but Openreach can also do you for you. maybe this guy you had was lazy, who knows

the person that installed my 2nd ont, removed the virgin cable for me, so its defo possible.

Could you? Yes
Should you? No
Will there be any repercussions? Probably not

You could probably ask an openreach engineer to remove it if you see them working on the pole. Some have had luck with that, although your mileage may vary.

Anything beyond your master socket is not your responsibility.
Openreach will remove copper lines at some point, in some areas they are doing this because of lack of capacity.

They were definitely a bit lazy - it was a bit of a messy install and they din't exactly choose the cleanest route...

Thanks everyone - I guess I'll just leave it be for now, I was just a bit surprised by his comment!

The point here is that your install was subbed out to Circet and they will likely just be paid per install completed, so faffing around with removing a copper wire that wasn't on the job sheet is extra time they are not getting paid for and their engineers are probably dissuaded from being too helpful and doing anything that's not on the job sheet.

After all, Circet might at a later date be the beneficiary of a separate paid job to remove the copper cable at a later date, whereas if they are too helpful now they eliminate that possibility.

That's modern business for you....
