replacements and connectors

long story short it seems one of my drives is likely to be failing, and planning on getting a replacement which will double the space that drive originally had.

however lm contemplating letting that drive get close to dying before replacing it, now l did have a sata to usb converter but the power pack that came with it is failing which is annoying because it meant l didnt have to use internal 4pin modex/sata power connectors to power the drive.

what lm after is a way to power the drive via usb or a caddy that will work that doesnt cost too much, annoyingly l cant seem to find the 3.5" xenta caddies l purchased on ebuyer any more (last one l got was little more than 8quid which l wouldnt have minded paying) however l dont really want to fork out for a caddy as its going to be an internal drive as soon as it starts to fail.

(long story short seatools and other tools have reported that its got problems and recommended replacement, however until it starts failing it would be useful to have a spare ready with files backed up on without having to keep swapping and changing drives in the caddies l already own).

How old is the drive?? Remember, until about a year ago they usually came with a 3-5 year warranty.

I had a 3 y/o WD drive replaced with no quibble about 2 years ago.

I havent managed to find what you are looking for either, I ended up using a cheap adapter that allowed you to connect bare IDE3.5, 2.5, SATA and mSATA via USB.

its pretty old and likely out of warranty sata drive tho l have converter cables its just that the power pack has started making a funny hissing sound which l dont like which came with my sata/ide to usb converter), the funny think is crystaldiskinfo was reading two of my drives as having bad sectors.. scanned both but only one reported as faulty on smart and short tests with seatools..

l opened up crystaldiskinfo a day or two back and one of the drives reading as having a problem doesnt seem to have one any more lol which lm happy with but my 500gb drive still notes current sector pending count errors, and seatools also recommended replacement (which it did before unlike the other drive that mentioned problems when running crystaldiskinfo), suffice to say l thought it would be easier using a caddy or another method to power it so l could backup the drive (with my sata/ide to usb converter) and well.. either let it fail before replacing or waiting till we possibly move, whatever came first.

(yeah l said we might be moving, had herefordshire housing out due to some rent arrears :/ which we are getting on top of now... but they had some other issues one of which was overcrowding since my sister moved back in, so they would like us to move into larger accommodation meaning a possible transfer to larger accommodation once we get homepoint sorted out).

I think the adapter I use simply powers the drive via the normal sata drive power connector and then you just plug it in via a Sata > USB adapter. So in that situation I just leave the drive in its bay, albeit data connected via USB. I haven't used the adapted for 8 months though, so it's under a mound of other office IT stuff and thus can't check.

Think I only paid a small amount on Amazon for it though, or maybe it was via Maplin.

lve seen the type of adapters you are on about (or at least l think l have).

tho l remember a friend of mine who used to run a computer shop had a usb to ide connector that was all one unit (both

power and transfer capabilities), and l wouldnt mind finding something similar but sata (tho having the ability to do both

would be useful) that said l already have a usb to sata/ide adapter (it does both) but no means l trust to power drives

externally as the power pack it came with seems to have started making a high pitched buzz and considering l have 364gb of

stuff to backup on the drive l dont like the idea of using it for the amount of time it would take to backup. still its

not like l cant use the sata caddy to transfer content.. but since l also access that drive daily for backup purposes it

will be kinda annoying to keep swapping and changing.

(took a while to post this since annoying server busy messages appeared again).

l think l have one of those laying around. tho being from ebay as the first power pack decided to start smoking.. l did get sent a replacement but lve rarely used it.

l did however acquire a usb 3.0 usb to sata connector (which has two usb connectors, one for power the other for transfer), but considering the christmas rush l doubt it will arrive till after.. l'll scan the old drive then, tho l will likely need to use it again next month as lm contemplating replacing my other two older hard drives.
