replacing my 4g phone which i use as a wifi hotspot with....

I currently use my phone as a hotspot wifi router for my flat using 3's unlimited 4g data. I have to place my phone on a certain window pane in order to get the best coverage which is annoying as i would rather have my phone on me. I know i can use 4g router instead of my phone but my understanding is you have to put the sim card in the router and therefore i would need to pay for two sims, one in the router and a seperate one for my phone. I would rather not pay for another contract when 3 's one provides all i need. I was wondering whether there is a way of replacing my phone on the window pane with something else that doesn't require the sim to be in it. I hope this is clear and i'm sure its long winded but although i try i'm not the best at tech stuff. Any info appreciated. Cheers.

I don't think so, the SIM generally has to go into the device with antennas / modem for signal reception. So you either stick it into a 4G mobile broadband router or put it into your phone. I think others on here have been able to put their 3 mobile plan sim into a 4G router and got it working.

How much data/how many calls do you make with your phone outside of the flat?

If it is only a few GB per month, bite the bullet and get a 2nd SIM and account, and put the unlimited SIM in a LTE router for the flat.

I seem to remember one supplier offering a multi-SIM plan years ago, so all the SIMS had their own phone number, but shared one account/data allowance etc. Not heard of it in more than a few years though.
Might be worth asking 3 if they do such a thing.

Thanks for the replies. I'd rather not spend an extra £20 or another sim but if that is the only way i might have to. At the moment i don't really use much data or calls on the go so i could just get a giffgaff sim for a fiver a month and put the three sim in a router but i was looking forward to having unlimited data on my phone mainly for spotify use on the go. Not heard of the multi-sim plans. I will ask Three for sure but i think its looking like an extra monthly outgoing.

I havent seen a multi-sim plan advertised for years, but they dont always advertise everything; and it never hurts to ask.
Explain the situation and see what they say.

Cough, Huawei 4g routers allow a domestic phone to be used on the sim card number. I use a B525. Need an adaptor.

The OP was asking to use the same account / SIM in a Mobile (while out and about) and have a 4G connection at home using a router. That would require 2 Sim cards for each device to authenticate on the Three network.

The B525 does give you an analogue phone connection (using the mobile number) but it drops from 4G to 3G/2G while the call is active (it doesn't support VoLTE.) which means your data session will drop as well during the voice call.

Its a useful feature for some but not what the OP was looking for.
