Results of BT Engineer Visit

BT engineer has visited and done extensive line tests and has found no fault there end.

And thanks to the person who advised me to make him a cuppa he fitted a faceplate splitter and relocated the master socket he changed the sockets round so the master socket is now slave and slave is now master:smilet::D

He rang BT wholesale who said that my speed had been throttled back and profile stuck.

BT wholesale said the router needs 3 reeboots over the next 3 days for speed to come back.

Is this correct and if so will it resynch back to its normal synch speed of 8128kbps as at the moment its 6560kbps

Thanks

Good to hear you had the good engineer just reboot as requested not 3 times one after the other do one a day..

Will do if i do it over 3 days do you think it will resynch at 8128kbps

One thing ive noticed since changing face plate to ADSL splitter is my line attenuation has risen to 13db normally its a constant 12db

Manofmeans can answer that better than me he is a wizard with ADSL will point him to this thread today when i see him on hte forums.. :)

Has you sync rate increased, the attenuation increased slightly according to my router each time I was regraded back to 1mbps (and decreased when I was regraded down to 512kbps)

Thanks for your help im glad i found this forum.

Ive just had a look at the wiring in the new boxes he had connected the Orange number 3 wire in both am i correct in thinking this is a ring wire and it does not need to be connected .

I have disconnected it in both boxe's is that ok to do, all i have connected now is 2 and 5 and line attenuation is back at 12db hopefully with those wires disconnected snr might gain a few dbs and the landline still rings

I think AOlhell throttled my connection back then as my router synched lower it stuck my ip profile.

Thanks for the link very useful

Im leaveing AOlhell asap

I pulled the orange ring wire a long time ago even though I'm on a fixed 1mbps connection - it improved the SNR margin and significantly reduced CRC errors.

It is only really necessary to disconnect it at the master socket, as proper UK spec ADSL filters don't pass the ring wire connection through they have their own ring capacitor instead. Disconnecting it both ends won't do any harm though.

I wouldnt advise to reboot your router at all as the BT's systems may see that as a problem and raise your SNR margin or enable interleaving, the speeds the engineer was saying about is the BRAS profile throughput speeds will increase but your sync rate wont, that needs the DLM system to see your line is stable and lower the SNR margin from 15 which is what i think you will be on at the moment.

Whats the line stats from your router?

Hi stats are connection speed is 6688 kbps line attenuation 12db and noise margin 15db router is a netgear DG834Gv3

Im confused now as i thought it was better to have higher noise margin previously noise margin was consistent at 12db

So if i have removed the orange wires to increase snr is that a bad thing

Also if i leave router on with the current synch speed then is it unlikely to rise to 8128kbps again. If it synchs lower than it used to my ip profile will be effected

Previously before problems it always synched at 8128kbps and speed tests were always around 6.5mb

At the moment speed test shows 489kbps

The noise margin is higher due to the line being intermittent and the BT systems raising the SNR margin to try and stop the intermittency which in turn has lowered your speed.

So if i have removed the orange wires to increase snr is that a bad thing

No this will help to raise the SNR margin but with how MaxDSL works the line is set to sync at a set SNR margin not a set sync speed before you would of been set to sync at 6db and now you are set to sync at 15db and more than likely with interleaving enabled.

The router needs to be left turned on at all times so any disconnections are not seen as a problem by the BT systems and they wont try and raise your SNR margin again which would in turn lower your sync speed even more.

That is because your line has been intermittent in the last 3 days and synced at 576 for a short period which will limit the throughput for 3 days from that sync event.

For your line to be riased back up to the 8128 sync speed you will have to wait for the systems in BT to see that your line is stable enough for the SNR to be lowered, untill then you wont get the 8128 sync speed you want.

Thanks for your advice ive learnt more from you in one post than i have from the Tech support morons at AOl in 5 years.

I think i havent helped my problems as i have been checking filters in all the bt sockets i have tested 10 in total in master sock diagnostic socket and slave so every time ive tested one that has caused router to disconnect. Thats 30 disconnections in about 2 hours:crap: .And before i had any issues i used to turn router off and reboot it maybe 10 times a day from now on its on 24/7

Interleaveing is turned on Aolhell say its on for all their customers and they cant turn it off.

I use my connection to play online games on PS2 interleaveing can increase ping is there isps out there who will turn it off at your request.

Ive got a month free from Aol and i have a mac code to be used by 8.4.07 iam finding a new provider but dont want to use any of the big ISps as all they want to do is take your money and when things go wrong they are a nightmare.

Thanks for you help much appreciated

Justin

According to the document linked above 10 disconnections in a hour will be treated as line instability.

Should I retrain my modem regularly? There is no need to retrain the modem routinely, as DLM provides a “heartbeat” to Max to ensure BRAS alignment. The modem only needs to be retrained to overcome low sync events, which can be detected by a low sync rate and higher than normal margin (e.g. above 20dB in the downstream). How many times can my line retrain per day before DLM acts? This is a BT Wholesale configurable parameter, but currently if a line retrains more than 10 times in any single hour period DLM will take action. It is therefore inadvisable to manually retrain a line more than 10 times in a single hour as DLM will interpret this as line instability.

I'm fairly sure I read a post by an AOL customer who managed to get AOL to disable interleaving, having suffered AOL support myself I expect it was a major struggle. If you use their 0870 number for 'support' there are alternatives listed here :- http://pathogenrush.blogspot.com/

Cheers Mel i found the Bristol Number for Aol the other week so i now phone them on mobile and use my free minutes.Which softens the blow when hold for 20 minutes just to get through to a moron with the IQ of a pot plant at least its not costing money on my landline.

Now ive found the number I might ring them more often with problems there always good for comedy.

They think uninstalling and reinstalling AOL solves all problems

Ive signed up with ADSL 24 this evening fed up with the bigger ISPs no customer service

Good to get rid of Aohell hopefully they will go bankrupt and take there new owners the craphone warehouse with them.

I drugged his coffee

All in all not a bad day got a NTE5 facepalte so no more having to do my head in thinking is it a filter causing my problems.

And got rid of AOHELL

Thanks for everyones advice
