Reviews

Hi Everyone,

It seems that the 'Old' faces are still trying to put down the efforts of us. For the record, we are a very small team and have far better things to deal with at present ( like the recent latancy issues ) than trying to present false ratings.
We ONLY advertise here and in Web User Magazine at present. It would be a fairly easy assumption to think that if we attract the majority of new customers from here then they may want to add their comments to the ratings system.

If anyone does have an issue then Paul or indeed myself are always on here and will try our upmost to rectify any problems in an effective manner.

I would have thought if peoples posting rights were to be suspended that would be Mark.J's decision.

I'd be grateful if you would elaborate on the need for this comment?

Old dude suggested reviews for Fast4 should be suspended (his opinion)
I suggested his posts be suspended until he got a better grip on his imagination (my opinion).

Are people only allowed opinions that you agree with?

Yet again I have to question your impartiality. As a moderator your opinion on any given subject shouldn't really come into it. Moderating is partly about not taking sides -- something you seem to struggle with -- especially if the thread in question concerns Fast4 or any of its affiliate companies.

Yes, a decision on posting rights is of course down to Mark.J and I've never suggested otherwise.

Old dude's persistent negative comments and badgering staff of an isp he's not even a customer of are wearing very, very thin. I'm not that interested in his reasoning behind it. It does appear tantamount to trolling, in much the same way as anyone posting constant positive threads about an ISP, also would.

It's an unhealthy interest, in my opinion, and I have to wonder how much longer it's going to go on.

I'm not that surprised some ISPs avoid posting on forums because of this sort of behaviour by people. They're coming to try and help, not get lambasted by some sort of Paul Heiney wannabe.

personally l think Old dude made some good points, altho l agree he can be a little outspoken now altho l dont agree with all his opinions l accept them as his own.. however l personally think you went a little to far in your post garethh taking pot shots at the mods is low at the best of times especially when you consider how few there are here and how big the job is to moderate and keep things under control, in fact l think they are doing a great job...

There's just as few mods on the thinkbroadband forum and it's a much, much bigger and busier site.

They manage to moderate with impartiality.

you forget this isnt thinkbroadband this is ispreview a completely different site, and on the note of impartiality l think the mods here have remained that.

I still think the whole review system here is flawed. For one, not everyone reads ISPReview!

The only way to get a true picture of an ISP is to visit their own forums and read what their members have to say.

Try http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums to see what I mean. :D

you forget
I don't forget.

I'm well aware this isn't thinkbroadband.

I was commenting that TBB only has two active mods -- in much the same way as ISPr only seems to have two active mods.

The difference is TBB has credibility as the mods don't take sides in debates.

I'm with Pimpernel on the fact the reviews system is flawed. It's been that way for years.

Sadly all Internet review systems are flawed, we just try to make ours less flawed than others by placing in as many checks as possible without asking for your home address too :) . This is one of the reasons why the best advice before choosing an ISP is to look at all the information you can find, from forums to news archives; never a single element. Ultimately if an ISP is having problems then it’s going to show up.

Regarding moderator impartiality; mods on ISPreview are not commercial employees as they can be on other sites and I recognise that they do have their own opinions as community volunteers. For me it’s always been a case of Kits putting far more back into the community than the tiny bit of annoyance often caused, but I won’t allow this topic to turn into another “lets bash Kits” one; that can become abusive too.

Back to reviews because we’re off-topic..

I agree with the Top 20 idea and will see what I can do about extending it, especially since dialup is almost dead and can’t maintain its Top 10 for much longer. I’m currently contemplating how best to implement such features with the new reviews system and will probably stick the Top 10/20 on our front page or integrate it into the main reviews index page.

I wonder how mant contributers to this topic have actually reviewed their own ISP in recent months, I only just did one for mine and I've been with them for 11 months. :o

How about for the topic of the next survey on the front page, asking if visitors have reviewed their ISP on this site in the last 6 months? and maybe giving some other options for why they hadn't.

It might encourage a few more reviews to be posted, as well as provide interesting results.

Could I suggest changing the "Cost" rating to "Value", so people rate their ISP on value for money rather than on the price alone, which anyone can check anyway.

Agreed. I was thinking that very thing when i was reviewing Fsat4 recently. I ended up treating the score as if it said 'value' and not cost. Obviously it is cheap cost, but that does not mean good value..

Hmmm let me see if the system will allow that.. *walks off to load the admin interface*.

Yep it looks like it'll allow me to do that, though I'll need to make some backups before doing any changes. Give me a few days, not sure I want to do a MySQL backup from my work place as they log too many access details.

Re:

Hi, It is entirely possible that the speed issues aren't as widely spread and you, one of the moderators and a handful of other vocal members try to make out.:)
