roadworks.org - Fibre (potentially FTTP rollout)

Seems to mirror what's being seen with BDUK generally.

Background of the project: minimum 2Mbps for all and 24Mbps+ for 90% with a largely fixed budget pot.

The only correct approach: tender for a partner or partner(s) able to fulfil those requirements with risk transference to said partner(s) and contract based on performance not technology. Identify means and methodology of independent testing to ensure targets achieved before all money is paid.

The actual approach: Shoehorn all LA's into having to use BT removing any possible leverage and destroying the chance of getting the best value for money. Give BT the money. Leave them to largely roll out their preferred solution as they see fit and be left with a small amount of money left. Then discover that all the most expensive areas left to do, which were always going to be the most expensive and readily identifiable from the outset, now cannot be done because there isn't enough money left and the risk remained with the taxpayer not the commercial partner.

Result: project failure.

There's a fair bit of roadworks happening on the ducts here atm, and I'm picking up hints that I may be getting FTTP sooner rather than later... I wonder how they'll handle a migration from FTTC to FTTP though!

Thorncombe Street/Selhurst Common, Bramley, you're getting WBC FTTP, hopefully by the end of the year based on roadworks!

Still no further news for me...

Update: My Copper DP pole now has a fibre manifold on it and BTWholesale's checker says WBC FTTP is available. Trouble is we moved to Plusnet a few weeks ago on an 18 month contract.

Ask plusnet if you can regrade to FTTP as it has now come available after all Plusnet is a BT owned company.

THEN watch them screw it up.

Despite it being natively fitted FTTP, DSLChecker lists WBC FTTP within FTTPoD as opposed to a row in its own right which is a bit odd.
Plusnet looks to be doing FTTP trials, so I may look into them.
