Router keeps dropping connection

I have a Wireless Box II, running firmware version 7.4.20.4.

Every so often - as little as 30 minutes sometimes - my router drops its internet connection (internet light goes red), then quickly reconnects again without a problem, at least for another 30 minutes or so.

During this time there are no obvious reasons for the drop - sometimes I'm not even using the computer or the phone. This is a problem because I use my connection for online gaming, which is nigh on impossible with an unreliable connection.

I have reset the router, checked the cables etc but it hasn't made any difference. I have also changed router DNS settings to openDNS, but its not helping.

Anyone got any ideas?

You know the drill akbray, post your router stats ;) .

Sounds to me like your Noise Margin might be occasionally dipping too low and cutting out the line.

I must have been having a blonde moment to forget the stats! :)

It has been dropping for a while, but it was only last night that I got round to actually monitoring it. The connection was dropped regularly after 30 mins (with the usual quick reconnect). I did a reset of the router (after spending 20 mins looking for a damn paper clip!) and checked the stats again this morning. It had dropped again after the reset, but had then maintained connection for 5 hours overnight.

I will post router stats when I get home tonight (assuming snow doesn't stop me getting home at a reasonable hour - it took me 8 hours to get home during the heavy snowfall at the end of December, and the weather forecast is similar for today. and tomorrow).

That seems a heck of a lot of HEC errors for a 1 hours & 56 minute uptime. Are there crackling noises on your phone line?

Edit.: oh, I just noticed they are in the up direction, that seems a bit odd.

try changing the channel , this has solved the problem for many people

I had the same trouble with O2 wireless box II, It was unusable I think it just slowly dies after a year or two. I'm now using Netgear DGN3300 v2 works with out any issues, I haven't had single dropped connection.

I had Belkin v1 router it had a better wireless coverage but died in few days. Netgear DGN3300 v2 so far working well for me

I need a good basic modem router - is the Netgear DG834G any good? I don't need wireless N etc, I just need something reliable, and I can get this one for about £30.

Also, is there such a thing as a modem/router with the ability to plug in a USB HDD and use it as network storage?

Any comments?

Off-hand, I know the Netgear DGN2200 has shared USB storage support and quite a few others but I am not hugely familiar with them. Nice feature to have though. The DG834G is good for raw line speed but I have kind of fallen out of love with NetGear because their Firewall's are annoying.

It is more likely that there is a issue on the voice line with the problem being on the upstream.

Its the usual suspects really try a different filter int he test socket and test the line via 17070 quiet line test with a non digital phone as some do have noise canceling built in.

From the sats though you will have a good line once this is sorted out it should give around 12-13meg i would of thought if not more.

Those stats were from January - it has been behaving much better for a while (I did a factory reset which seemed to help) although it still drops fairly regularly (at least once a day -sometimes more).

Getting disconnected from Xbox Live in the middle of a game is starting to get very irritating!
