Router/modem wired/wireless and which!?

Hello good fellows/fellowettes!

Some advice needed please

I'll finally be free of Tiscali on Monday and am considering getting a router so i can have a constant connection for the 10 day training period with Fast.

Do you think this is really worth doing? At the mo i've got a Speedtouch 330 modem. The package i'm gonna have with Fast is the 15gb Cap MAX deal and my line should be able to support 4.5Mbps or more.

Is it worth me getting wireless? I'm not really bothered about cables and my PC never moves, plus i've heard wired could give me a more stable connection which would be v. useful in training period.

Routers i'm considering are:

1) Netgear - DG632 ADSL Modem Router (£50)

2) Zyxel Prestige 660HW-T1 802.11g 54Mbps Wireless 4 x 10/100 ADSL Modem/Router Bundle with FREE G202 USB Adapter (£40)

3) Netgear DG834 ADSL Firewall Router (£60)

Any thoughts/ help would be much appreciated!

Most routers come with wireless whether you like it or not, but you might as well since generally the cost difference isn't that vast. Similarly they usually come with their own built-in Firewall's and you can't complain about having more security ;) .

Personally I use cables (wired) wherever possible and wireless for more distant/mobile devices, such as laptops, PDA's and or games consoles etc. That and I don’t trust wireless connections in densely urban environments, having seen even the toughest links hacked.

I got my Netgear 834 a lot cheaper than that from Broadbandbuyer about 3 months ago it was £40 something 8 I think . It is an excellent Modem/Router

Thanks for the input. I'm gonna go with the Netgear DG834 (wired) unless anyone screams 'NO DON'T DO IT YOU FOOL!' before 3.15pm today. I need one by Monday and they sell it in the shop round the corner. They say they'll allow it to be exchanged if it's a duffer (like many ppl have said - it seems to be perfect or useless so fingers crossed).

Will let you know how i get on anyway, cheers folks

I got the Netgear 843 and I think its brilliant.....
Mine has the wireless and it even goes through our lead lined walls....

Best buy I have done in a while!

Mine is the wired version of the 834 you will be amazed at how easy it is to set up .

OK so far!

Well it all seems to be working OK but wasn't quite the doddle i thought it would be. During set-up it said:

'No Cable or Router Detected
During the network activation process the Wizard was not able to detect the router.
If you have more than one network card in your computer you MUST remove or disable the device that is not connected to the router.'
etc..

From a list it let me choose (among other options'1394 Net Adapter' and 'NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller'. As you can see, i have both:

COMMUNICATIONS

1394 Net Adapter
802.11g PCI Wireless Network Adapter
Dhcp Server: 192.168.11.1
Physical Address: 00:11:09:F7:E4:58
NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller (primary)
blah blah blah

In the end i got my mate round who had a fiddle in the device manager and enabled the right thing (i think), then it all worked fine.

While gaming online last night however, i got disconnected twice (8pm and 2am ish) and had to restart comp. to get back on. This was was a problem i had previously attributed to Tiscali's incompetence - hoping it's just Fast's training period sorting itself out now. Any ideas?

Also, i spoke to tech support who said, contrary to what i've read on here, that you should disconnect router for at least 15mins every day as this will help BT establish what your line capacity is better. True or false?

Update

Hate it when ppl say they'll let you know how they got on and never do, so just to say, my Netgear DG834 (wired) is workin fine. No disconnections or owt, so all good :) . Recommended
