router or mobile phone (backup connection)

Hi guys,

We have VM at home, but lately there have been some disconnections as well as poor WiFi coverage.

I installed a TP-Link AX73 router which seems to have dealt with the WiFi issues.Thinking of getting a router or a mobile phone for backup purposes when VM disconnects. Currently using work's Poco X4 Pro 5G which saved us on VM changeover day as well as 3x other occasions.

We are not in a 5G area, but the 4G is enough for us to work + web-conferencing + Netflix in the evening. I will soon have to return my work's mobile device, but will keep the SIM (smarty unlimited).

My question: which phone and/or router would you guys suggest me to get? 5G router for future proof or stick with a 4G router? or maybe just get another second-hand 5G mobile phone (to double as spare handset)?

I am leaning towards getting a 4G router, but unsure which model is kind of reliable/cost-effective ZTE MF286D?

Comments are appreciated.

The MF286D is a decent lte router, it's cat 12, should get you reasonable speeds and it's around £40 at CeX.
This router is not as good as the Poco (cat 18), but I think it could give you the speed you need for meetings and streaming.

Are you sure it's not just the router VM supply? We have had Google WiFi installed since day one and never had any issues, and the VM router just in modem mode.

Could be the virgin street cabinet, in oversold areas there's cabinets that virgin haven't upgraded and some customers have been sold 500 and above and only see 300 max.

We had a Hub3 before on a BB50 only package. Connection was reliable and WiFi okay. Could not get a good deal to renew BB50. Took another contract as new customer on BB200. Not sure whether it could be the "new/refurb/recycled" Hub3 they sent me. Don't ask me why, but after installing the tp-link router the latency, packet loss and connection overall is much better (of course WiFi coverage now is fixed).

Now debating whether to get the MF286D or another Poco phone for the backup SIM...

Thanks guys for the comments, much appreciated!
