Hello, I am new to the world of routers and have a couple of questions. First, I am used to a system of logging off the internet when I have finished with it such as AOL and then carry on using my computer. Now when I close down my browser, should I turn off the router? Does it damage a router to be turned on and off? Finally if I leave it on it seems that my computer is connected to the world whether or not I am using the internet. Forgive the ramblings of a fool but any answers would be appreciated.

What butler said is correct, routers are designed to be left on 24/7 however the majority of them will allow you to drop (disconnect) the internet connection after a set amount of inactive time if you wish, effectively removing the router from the internet altogether. The router will redial an internet connection the next time your computer makes an internet based request.

If you turn your computer off but leave your router on, if anyone was able to bypass the router's security they wouldn't be able to reach your computer.

But you will not damage a router by turning it off every time, just be aware that some routers can take longer to boot and train an ADSL signal than your average new PC so you may be waiting for a while once your computer is up and running for the router to catch up - this can be even worse if you are connecting to the router wirelessly.

Thank you. The router is supplied from o2 and called a wireless box 2. I have changed the password within the router and have a firewall on the 'pooter'.
However, I have no idea about "Network address Translation , and make sure that your pooter cannot be woken over lan."
Other than that thinks are looking up. Cheers.
