BW ok and Jolt not ... I can see a problem around the LINX ... but is it AOL or LINX or what.

Please advise, thanks.

you took the trace last night from what i can see and LINX was having a bit of trouble :) it decided to throw a wobler according to blueyonder.

basically tho LINX is where a lot of the uk's internet traffic goes through (LINX = London Internet Exchange).

if you keep getting pings like that id get onto AOL see what they can do about it.

Yes ... I took them last night. I'd better just point out that I'm on a 56K connection so the TraceRoute to BW looks fine.

But Jolt and BY both have the same problem. When I get to LINX it goes, as you say, a bit wobbly.

I hope it gets sorted ... I don’t think AOL will help me that much, that’s why I thought I would ask around first.

Anyway ... thanks for you help :D

Sorted :)

It's pretty good for a modem and exceptional considering he's on aol.

plur ...

This is not exceptional for AOL at all ... I know other peeps on AOL and they have just the same pings as me.

With other ISP's ... including any of the best 0845 numbers, I get something like 120ms pings using VisualRoute to the same server (213.221.174.102)

Saying that AOL is still occasionally having this same problem :(

haircut i've got the same problems to jolt aswell.

Barrysworld is fine all the time, on isdn i always get a 50 ping.

However Jolt seems to be up and down; a week ago i first noticed a 70-140 ping, then on around sunday the pings were fine - as good as barrysworld, but now they've gone bad again.

At first I wondered whether it was something to do with Jolt, as to one jolt server i pinged it at 27 (through dos) and to another it was about 70. However last night they were all pinging badly, so i just played on barrysworld. I might give aol a call though and see if they know what's going on.

Well ... when the problem is happening ... I then try playing on the same server with one of the 0845 ISP's and ... It seems fine

I'm not an expert as to what happens when private networks get to the LINX ... I dunno if it is the LINX it self as Mark Mc mentioned or just AOL's "connection" to/in LINX.

I think AOL are doing something with the network ... The phone numbers have changed again.

Last night was unbelievable though ... If you think the pings above are good then last night they were 10ms better ... using VisualRoute to the same server. Yes sub 90ms pings on 56K

In game pings reported by HL were really good as well and I had one of the most stable connections ever ... but that was yesterday ... dunno what it will be like tonight :p

Hay shots .... don't apologise for having AOL.

People never believe me when I say I use AOL for gaming. You just have to look at my pings ... they are good.

As an On-Line gamer on a 56K connection the most important thing I need is a good stable Ping, AOL gives me that.

Well these might give some idea to the problems:

?San Jose, CA 95113 and
?Reston, VA 20191

CA is california and VA (i think) is Vancouver.

This is why some people have high pings/latency sometimes - you get routed to the US and then back to UK or wherever the game server is.

I never managed better than 400ms with AOL.

Yes ... I know I get routed to America and back. Which makes my ping even more surprisingly good :D and I don't think this is the reason for the high ping ... take a look at the route ... It hits the LINX and gets screwed there. Barrysworld is fine and Jolt is not. Nothing to do with going to America and back.

Can someone correct me if I'm misunderstanding the traceroute :D

Funny thing is if I try to play on an American server. I get routed to America, back to the UK and then back to America ...

Anyway ... things have been ok since. I guess AOL were messing around

OK, if u go to da link below, have a look at my posts on da tracroutes to clarity.jolt.co.uk and alos a straight pingin which may clear the UK pakets issue with AOL.

right ok lok there, have a think and post in that thread pls, cos i only got here from a link so i dont know where it is??!! lol, oo yer i do now << looks at top of IE page 80)

If i was you id just stick to BW servers coz jolt sux anyways...they only care about servers they are getting payed for and not the public ones so lag is expected:( either that just use jolts clan servers as they seem to be not too bad:)

The problem I have with BW is they don't take DoD seriously. So I play on Jolt most of the time, although recently I’ve found BY very good.

Jolt run a better service than BarrysWorld, hands-down... Plus their aDSL kicks ass.
