Running Java safely

Ordinarily, any piece of software that requires Java to be installed simply gets skipped and I find something else.

However I've come across a handy piece of kit which I'd like to use. It does however require Java.

I have personally had PC compromises twice via Java which has to be the least secure piece of kit ever created and last time I vowed never to install it again.

Does anyone have experience of installing and running it safely, for instance as a Guest account with very limited permissions?

Is this thing just a program like jDownloader, MineCraft, MultiBit (bitcoins) etc?
If so, install Java.. then go into the control panel and to the security tab and un-tick the "Run Java in browsers" option!

You can still use Java based programs but it won't open you up to browser based infections!

It's a tool called "Screaming Frog" which I wanted to try out. Assesses websites and builds reports on the basics for SEO/marketing purposes. Looks quite good.

Thanks for the tip - I'll have a go at installing it on the laptop later on with a separate user account.

I would run the software on a VM (Virtual Box).
Give it some ram and its own IP etc if you are unsure.
Keeps java of your own machine etc.

As has been pointed out Java is perfectly safe(or as safe as any other programming platform), just shut down the Java web browser plug-in - that's where you typically get security issues. :hrmph:

You can also get portable java runtime files that can be called manually per application, rather than installed. But I've not tried it myself.
