RWG vs. 1pmobile for EE network monthly data-only SIMs

So.......... 5G or not? ;-) ;-) ;-)
Well the upper part is a 5G antenna, but mine are just decorative, they've never been turned on, nor likely to be.

No idea about yours IJD :giggle:

There doesn't seem to be any way to confirm which EE MVNOs support B20, and some of the advertising is definitely dodgy if they don't -- for example claims about using EEs network which has the best coverage... :-(
Agreed - it seems like there needs to be a bit more clarity in this sort of thing. The RWG website does link to what seems to be a special Nowtel coverage map on EE's website, which shows worse coverage than EE itself (and most of Wales north of Bannau Brycheiniog uncovered) due to the lack of B20: https://coverage.ee.co.uk/coverage/nowtel-payg

It's disingenuous on their part to claim that they offer "the EE network" when they only offer part of it.

I chatted to them online yesterday and they were unconvinced (blame the router! blame the signal!), but also didn't seem very knowledgeable. So I've just sent support a detailed email with screenshots and maps attached, hopefully this will get to somebody technically savvy... ;-)
Scancom just told me that there's an error on their website and the SIM I bought doesn't support 5G, so that's a result (and refund). Now to get one that *does* support 5G... ;-)

...and now I have (from Scancom), it does :-)

Using a 3GB/month SIM for now (£30 total until 31/01/2024) for getting everything working. Will probably use 1pmobile (£20/month for 200GB/month) when on the boat -- the Scancom unlimited SIM (£240 inc. VAT on Amazon until 08/01/2025 = £12pcm) would be better if I was on it all the time, but not for a few months per year.

Thanks for the advice/warnings about RWG, especially lack of B20... ;-)

If I may add my two penn'orth, my recent, brief, experience with RWG wasn't great insofar as I called them on four separate occasions over two days to make initial enquiries about joining them - and every time was greeted by their (cyber sounding and decidedly impersonal) answering machine which invited callers to leave a message. I did as instructed and waited .... and having left two polite messages and having received no reply from them, gave up on them and signed up direct with EE (it's been about a month now so am not holding my breath waiting to hear from RWG).

Have to say the experience with EE was excellent. All calls to them were answered quite quickly by UK based advisors, my SIM was sent out straight away, my PAC was dealt with efficiently, my account, billing and direct debit was sorted out in no time and the queries I made were all answered by staff who seemed to know their stuff and the coverage /reception is great.

I signed up with EE for two years at £9.50 a month with unlimited calls and texts + 25GB on what is called an "Essential" plan. obviously it'll increase over the next two years after which I can look to see what's available again.

I joined EE after being with o2 on a monthly plan which offered unlimited calls/texts + 4GB for £6 a month (which latterly increased with inflation to £7.03p) so it was cheap enough - but, whilst the phone coverage was OK, I found the data reception in the TQ12 and TQ13 areas wasn't good, whereas EE reception was/is much better.

Before going with the o2 monthly contract I was previously on the (now withdrawn) o2 Classic PAYG at 3p/2p/1p (and my Mrs. is still on it) and it was OK apart from the poor data reception locally - on reflection I don't know why I stuck with o2 knowing the data reception was patchy ... silly me ... however o2 did release me half way through my year's contract with no penalties and, althought their customer service is in Egypt, I have to say the staff were good and were helpful wherever they could be.

Maybe one of the 1pMobile plans would suit my Mrs. if push came to shove. Maybe they would suit me too in two years time when my EE contract runs out. I would be quite confident in moving to them if the figures added up - I did ring their number and, after a couple of attempts, got through to a helpful lady in the UK who inspired me with confidence. I would have gone with them this time but on the face of it unlimited calls/texts and 10GB with 1pMobile is a tenner and with EE I get the same calls/texts but more data and it's a bit cheaper (at the moment). The main difference at the moment is 1pMobile has a short contract whereas EE is two years.... I might come to regret my choice??

Something I would like to know is, of course, is my coverage, signed up directly with EE, actually any better than the coverage would be with an MVNO like 1pMobile??
Having read the stuff in the rest of this thread I'm still not sure.

Enough ...... I've started to ramble ......

Based on my limited experience last year when I had 1P sim for 2 months and my partner was still on EE, I didn't notice any speed or coverage different between 1P and EE it self.

I didn't notice a difference but someone else might had a different experience and noted a different between them.

@kswb no difference between 1p mobile and EE, apart from the two CPI hikes on your EE contract over the next two years which will make it far more expensive than £10 a month on the 30 day 1p mobile agreement.

Thanks for the quick replies ^^^^

At the moment I'm still basking in the glory of having saved 50p a month by going with EE rather than 1pMobile :)

But, yes, I may have shot myself in the foot if it became, as meritez says 'far more expensive'. But, having said that, if it goes up by, say, 15% on one occasion that makes it £10.92 ... and if it went again by, say, 10% then it would be £12.00 and looking at what other EE users are apparently paying on their contracts I still don't think that's exhorbitant. And for that outlay I feel confident I would be getting the best signal available and, judging by recent experience, I'd be getting pretty decent service from their advisors too. But, I agree, 1pMobile may well have been as good, if not better, and time will tell.

Thanks again.

The deal you on EE is better in someway to £10 1P offering 25GB instead of 10GB, 1P got a few advantages no contract or CPI increases not limited to 100Mbp and got EU roaming.

If 100Mbps limitations isn't a issue for most usercase it fine and you don't go abroad to EU and need roaming, then the EE deal is seems better since got more data.

Just wondering did you call EE to get that deal or was it upgrade from pay as you go offer since 25Gb is priced a lot higher than £9.50.

Just by way of a reminder, I wasn't on an EE PAYG deal, I was originally on the o2 '321' PAYG plan (which is still in use for existing customers but withdrawn for new ones) ..... and then, 6 months ago, swapped to the o2 12 month contract at £6 per month for 4GB data plus calls and texts..............

............. and then called EE and told them I was paying £6 a month to o2 and asked what they could offer - they came back with £9.80 for calls/texts and 25GB (which I 'believe' was a 12 month contract) and I let it rest there for a few days - THEN rang back and was put through to someone else who consulted their manager and came back to me with £9.50 for two years (it would have been more for just one year). To be honest I didn't think too deeply at the time and considered £9.50 to be very reasonable and didn't anticipate wanting or needing to move away from EE as, in my experience over a good few years, none of the other networks have been an improvement either in customer service or in coverage.

Is if hasn't been more than 14 days you can still cancel without penalty.

Very valid point, Lucian. It has been in my mind. But the case for pulling out doesn't seem 100% conclusive to me. The account is set up, the direct debit is set up, I don't know if I'd get that offer again, the customer service and logistics of the SIM provision and the porting of my number were all so efficient. Do I really want to change in order to save, what might be, just £2 a month?
