Satellite Broadband absurdly slow.

I believe that senior people from the satellite providers keep an eye on this forum, if so perhaps someone would be kind enough to explain what has gone wrong in the last few weeks.
Normally the service is perfectly OK, a download speed of around 10Mbps and always an upload of 6Mbps. At least that is the speed during the day, obviously a bit slower during busy times. However lately the download is, on occassions, only 2 to 3 Mbps and the upload even lower. Last Saturday at 5pm it was 0.05 of a Meg and then the connection failed completely. Even at 11am this morning streaming videos were very jerky.
Clearly there is something wrong, can you give any idea as to when it will be put right? I realise that the problem is in Turin but surely someone should be able to provide an explanation.

The description suggests you're on an ISP that uses the Eutelsat / Skylogic TooWay platform, most likely aligned to the KA-SAT spacecraft at 9°East, but at 10Mbps it could also be one of their older Satellites (do you know the exact degree alignment of your dish?).

Unfortunately we have seen a lot of complaints about rising network congestion on that platform, which seems the most likely cause. The problem with Satellite is that you can't just increase the capacity, a whole new / expensive spacecraft needs to be built and that can take several years to bring into operation.

It's also possible that your dish may be nudging slightly out of alignment or there could be some water ingress into the cable. Digital satellite signals require a much narrower / tighter lock and so a small problem there might be at least partly to blame. In some cases the weather may also play a part.

As usual your first port of call should be to ask the ISP itself, but if they're anything like a lot of other Satellite providers then they might not be able to offer a clear fix.

Yes it is a Tooway system, sorry i should have said. A neighbour has exactly the same problem so it is not likely to be a fault with the dish. Your answer is very depressing. It means that a lot of people are being short changed, it is not a cheap way to connect to the internet and at the moment it is a part time service. I will give it a month but if nothing changes then there is no point paying for a system that is no better than a 1Mbps ADSL phone line.

Heavy weather can cause issues - if it is between your dish and the satellite.

Although I understood that the providers here in the UK had no control over speed I decided to change to another provider anyway, more out of desperation than logic. I signed up with Europasat and after eight weeks and during the school holidays the speeds are excellent. No problem watching streaming video during the day and on a couple of occasions during the evening the speedprobe recorded more than 10Mbps. Should have switched earlier!

Europasat sells services via three different Satellite platforms, only one of which is the same as Tooway. Which package / service did you pick?
