SCOTDSL - Users and potential users take note

I originally signed up with ScotDSL as they offered unrestricted and unthrottled download. As a P2P and streaming media user this important to me.

Anyway, last week and out of the blue my connection cut down to a trickle. I telephoned their 60p a minute support line to be told it was a problem their end and it would soon be up to speed. I also posted a message on their internal mail to ask what the issue was. I checked my message board to day to read the following:

Taken from the Acceptable Use Policy of our terms and conditions (available at this link):

11.2 To ensure we offer all our customers the best possible service, we apply the following restrictions. We continuously monitor our networks to ensure that congestion is not occurring. If usage is such that it is significantly affecting service to other users we will instigate congestion control measures. Heavy-usage applications such as continuous Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing, streaming video, binary downloads or other intensive uses are not acceptable. Where the Service has been deemed to have been used inappropriately or indeed illegally to the detriment of the overall Service, we reserve the right to take action against this account.

We have always included within our Terms and Condtions of service a clause pertaining to network abuse and how we will take action against customers whose use is detrimentally affecting the service of other users: this policy is now being enforced and customers whom have used their connection to the detriment of the network as a whole will now find their service is restricted, to prevent continued abuse of the network as a whole.

11:00:13 Technical Support If you can confirm that you will use the service within the terms and conditions of service, I can pass on your account details to our network abuse team who will then contact you via email to confirm if your account restriction can be lifted.

I have now requested a MAC notice and will move to one of the many rival companies offering either unrestricted useage or a useage allowance enough for me - I probably use about 100-150 G per month.

I am quite happy to pay a premium for a genuinely unrestricted account but it maddens me when a company does not honour its promises. Also, it annoys me that they did not tell me what the problem was when I telephoned and did not email me in advance or give me any warning, they just cut the service.

I post this for the benefit of other SCOTDSL customer or others considering switching to this company

Unfortunatly your victim of an uncaring ISP. Scotdsl's service is provided by the same people that run Fast4

There is more information here: http://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/showthread.php?t=25343

which is very relevant to you, as it looks like exactly the same terms and conditions clause thats been added.

Id like to say more, but fear of getting banned from this part of the forum as well as the Fast4 one, dispite being correct about everything

Interestingly, thats exactly the same response someone from Fast4 got from a Paul Moody.

If its the same Paul, that means they do tech support for scotdsl.

Meaning, they have very few tech support people for so many.

Can we confirm any of this or is is just 'suspicion'?
I only ask because the T&C's on the scotDSL site are penned by NJPServices and they are hotlinked to the njpservices HTTPS addy.... yet the domain is owned by JJTEK Computers who reside (according to Companies House)...

Name & Registered Office:
JJTEK COMPUTERS LIMITED
25A HIGH STREET
ELGIN
MORAY IV30 1EE

Oddly enough scot DSL does not show on the C/House webcheck facility...so it would appear it is not registered as a business with them.
So far the only 'proof' of NJP/Fast4 involvement seems to be the hotlinked T&C pages....

OldDude (and myself) are going on the basis of the ticket that the OP (who is with ScotDSL) received from paul in tech support. Which is the same answer that Paul from Fast4 tech support has been using for Fast4 customers.

I have read that they use the same support system..and looks like same support staff. I cant comment on the ownership of company however, one thing doesnt mean the other.

edit - actually, read the following for some interesting notes which goes a way to explaining it.

I was with an ISP called jjtek.

so far as i understand the were using V21 to provide broadband.

they said i was not supplied by v21 but by a company called Your communications. they told me that my MAC code would be issued by Eurisp.

then out of the blue tonight i got an email asking me to move my jjtek account to scotdsl. this was a big surprise as i thought jjtek had gone out of action months ago (web site and user portal were unaccessible).

secondly i look at the sign up page and it looks familar. Hell it is it the same as that of the v21 phoenix. different name for the same package but different prices, same list of hardware at the same prices.

I studied the similar screens at bit harded and i noticed that they are both provided by a company called njpservices.

so i checked out njpservices which brings a smile to my face as Fast4.net pop up in the home page.

so what's my question. Who knows? so many so much confusion my head is spinning.

Who are njpservices?

Are Fast4 a good ISP to move to under the veil if v21 or jjtek or scotdsl?

Ahh, so they are in fact a VISP of the old V21/new NJP/FAST4...so apart from buying their access from NJP/fast4 and reselling it to their own customer base they are nothing whatever to do with NJP/Fast4 and are NOT run by NJP/Fast4...they are another 'Zaggle' or have I missed something?

While i think that Fast4 provide tech support for them, i dont know more than that, Ill leave that to someone more knowledgeable than me. However what i did find odd was the above quote comment when he said,

"i got an email asking me to move my jjtek account to scotdsl".

Couple that with your finding that the scotdsl domain is owned by jjtek....

Read their T&Cs https://secure.njpservices.com/cust...nt=1&smp_id=9&a_code=scotdsl&pt=93&pn=ScotMAX They appear to be a visp/ agent marketting NJPservices 'services'. presumably they are paid commission rather than buying in access and reselling it as such.

"In these terms and conditions “we”, “us”, “our” and the “Company“ refers to NJP Services Ltd "

"Before we can be sure that we can provide you with the Service we need to do the following: "

I suppose you could be right in that they are seperate. However, they still use the same terms and conditions, in fact they link straight to the NPJ site.

They obviously also use the same people for tech support. Im not quite sure what they are offering?

Oddly...

Scotdsl Customer Services: 0871 424 4064 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm - national rate)

Fast4 customer services: 0871 424 0185 9am-5pm, Mon-Thurs 9am-4pm, Fri

Scotdsl tech support: Tech Support: 0905 067 0036 (Available 24/7, 365 days a year 60p per min)

Fast4 24/7 support: 0905 067 0035

Now those numbers are similar, so Im assuming NJP would give them out to resellers/visp's then, for contact as they are providing tech support? They obviously go to the same place. I wouldnt be suprised if the tickets do too. This is backedup by the response from Paul which is the same as one given out by Paul from Fast4.

Ok, so if its a seperate company I apologise. Although technically I could argue its the same, as its just someone reselling it and doing nothing else. Simply advertising.

However, as scotdsl has the same contract, and the same support as Fast4, your in exactly the same boat.

I think that is about the size of it, I'd suggest you amend the line in your original post to say something like "Scotdsl's service is provided by the same people that run Fast4" which I think is more accurate.
