Secondary data sim options?

I have ported my main line from Smarty over to O2 which is now on an eSim so I am looking at EE based options.

The clear candidate is a 1p mobile sim which I can flick on if / when O2 starts to struggle.

Is there anything else? I am looking at very low data usage, this will be used if and when O2 data does not work, not for voice.

We have two personal phones on RWG free tariff (no longer available, 50 min, 50 texts, 250MB each month).

Also a house mobile on RWG £20/YEAR which has a 2GB per month data allowance. There is a two year deal for £35 still.

The house mobile was switched from 1p Mobile because you have to top up at least £10 every 120 days. That's £30pa. You could make a text donation to charity to reduce the credit build up.

RWG: your credit doesn't need topping up, never expires and you can use it as PAYG 5p/min 5p text 1p data i.e. get a SIM, top up £5, don't buy any bundle.

Thanks for your post, I have gone with the £20 a year deal. I don't need the roaming as I have it on O2.

I’ll be spending £10 every 4 months on 1p, which obviously is more than RWG.

For eSim capable phones BNESIM has non-expiring data that uses multiple carriers.
I have a BNE sim but it seems to grip hold of O2. It’s frustrating if the sim has a signal but the data speeds are dribbling down at 1Mbps, you have to go in and manually change the network, which causes a lack of service on the main sim.

Don't forget that if you're doing this to get data coverage when O2 fails -- which is likely to be in poor signal areas, where EE is generally better anyway -- then RWG do not have access to all the EE bands including those used to extend rural coverage. 1pmobile have exactly the same coverage as EE.

Depends on if it's an RWG voice or data sim, the data sims are just EE m2m sims.

That said I did not have a particularly good experience with RWG when I ran into an issue with one of my cards (Subscription failed, paid manually by creating a new order given there's no way to update payment details, they didn't process it and suspended everything I had with them anyway)

This is more for when O2 stalls in saturated areas. Busy city centres, airports etc.
