Sending international texts from Lebara on Pixel 7a

I have a 5GB monthly plan with PAYG top up for sending international texts from the UK.

This works to Australia (25p per text) but not to Greece. I'm charged 6p per text for these but they don't arrive.

Lebara apologised, gave me £2 PAYG credit and said it should work but it doesn't.

Any ideas why my messages aren't being delivered?

Mike

Lebara exist in Australia, so your texts to Australian numbers are routing through Lebara's network.

Which mobile network in Greece are you texting?

Although Lebara do exist in Aus, the Lebara SMSC here in the UK will receive the message and it be doing an HLR lookup to find how to route the message to the destination number and it's network in Aus.

Even if the destination number in Aus happens to be on Lebara AUS I don't think any of us could be certain the signalling of the message from UK to AUS would definitely be an internal to Lebara thing.

I don't know the network in Greece I'm afraid.

My wife also uses Lebara on her Samsung phone and a text message from that to the same number in Greece was delivered.

What is it about Pixel phones 🤔?

Mike

This might not be a Lebara issue.
Are you sending the texts to another Android phone in Greece?
Most Android to Android texts are now via Google RCS.
Sometimes RCS gets "confused" especially after swapping networks and using temporary numbers etc

Sorry I don't know what phone the recipient is using. Also never heard of RCS, I'll need to look that up.

Mike

It's fairly obvious to spot when it's either a Text message or RCS message as the box you type the message into says it's going to be sent as Text (SMS/MMS) or RCS. You also get the little tick marks below a sent message to show the delivery status on RCS messages that you don't get on Texts.

OK thanks, I've enabled RCS now and can see the indicators you mentioned. Also discovered my son has it enabled on his phone but he had no idea what it was.

Interesting stuff but it doesn't fix my problem of sending texts to Greece so I'll poke Lebara again.

Mike

When sending international SMS, there needs to be an agreement between the sender and the receiving network. It isn't anything to do with the underlying models of phones.

However, have you tried sending a message now you've enabled RCS? Does the Greek number have it enabled?

When sending messages internationally, I always remove mobile networks from the equation and just send messages via WhatsApp.

Yes I tried sending a message after enabling RCS but it went as an SMS so I presume the recipient doesn't have RCS. We are in Greece now and when I see them I will find out what phone and network they are using. We are on the Vodafone network here. I don't use WhatsApp.

Mike

RCS is currently only an Android thing but Google have convinced Apple to integrate RCS into iMessage at which point RCS should become a lot more prevalent, although users do have to accept some Google T&C's when it's enabled. Not sure when iMessage will start to enable support.
