Serious Connection Issue - Please help

Hi Guys

I'm currently having problems with my Virgin broadband account. The connection seems to be dropping out a lot of the time. For example, I connected to Virgin broadband this afternoon around 2.30pm, and between then and 5.30pm broadband has had to reconnect 35 times. The dropouts occur randomly, every few minutes usually, and usually the modem connects again within 10 or 15 seconds, though sometimes it takes longer. During these short dropouts, when the connection resumes, I do not have to reconnect manually, the internet just starts again where it left off. This has been happening intermittently over the last few weeks, and it's now becoming rare that I get a connection that is stable for any length of time. These last 3 or 4 days in particular have been the worst and it seems to be getting worse every day.

Is this a fault with my equipment, the physical BT line or with the connection to Virgin.net? If you could suggest anything I could try to narrow down where the fault lies, this would be a great help.

Many Thanks

Checks

The first things I would do would be:

1. Replace the DSL Filter

2. Check all cables

3. Make sure that the cable between the phone line and modem is no longer than 3 metres.

4. Check the condition of the phone line

5. Get bt to check for line noise

6. Uninstall/reinstall the modem

7. Download new drrivers for modem

8. Get your ISP to check the line

Just a few things that you could try ;)

Wow, those are some great tips for me to try. I'll let you know what happens. Many thanks. Could another possibility be that Virgin.net is giving me crap connections as they perhaps deem me as a "heavy" user? Just a thought.

Thanks again.

with ADSL there are many things that can cause connection problems, it's best too try the ideas that I suggested. It's not always the ISP's fault.

If after all those, then it could be. But's it's best too troubleshoot, otherwise when you phone Virgin. You'll probably find they will ask you too try alot of the things that I have suggested.

Well said.
Always try to see whether the fault is at your end before contacting your ISP, contact your ISP afterwards if necessary. Make sure it is the ISP fault before criticising your ISP.

Actually, what will probably happen is that you will tell the tech support that you have alrewady tried and they will still insist on talking you through it.
