Sick of ISDN BullSh!ters!!

Mullac, the HL engine has erratic latency management. I used to have ISDN and i have also seen a 17 ping in cs; bs tho. About the lowest achievable 'in game' ping you are going to see is about 28 (with compression) and only on an empty/almost empty server.

Thats 35 at the bottom.. :)

I use an asuscom internal pci card... however i find i get better pings if i connect through another machine to the net... ie using ics prolly something to do with using the other machines cpu for the connection...

As for not getting 17 in game.. yea thats probably right.. best ive seen in game on our server is low 30s.. yes thats jumping around mid-game btw. It also depends a lot on hl rates... higher rates mean more data is being sent hence a higher ping.. however i feel the game plays better with rates up. Anyway.. ping doesnt make a player and that seems even more true with the release of cs 1.4.. so... want a game?

is this thread still going.

At my home I have 512Kbps ADSL and ping 35-40 average on Demon TFC servers.

At the office we have 2x 2Mbps ADSL connections, one pings at 30-35 and the other 25-30. The 25-30 ping comes from a connection directly into Telehouse, so the pings/tracerts are going to be less.

Pings from the 25-30 ping connection should be less when accessing Barrysworld servers because Barrysworld is hosted at RedBus on Level3 bandwidth. Redbus has dark fibre connections from Telehouse :)

BTW, those considering UK2.NET's ADSL connection at £20 a month should consider it very hard. They are a large company with connections using Band-X bandwidth. Anyone considering setting up servers at Band-X should also consider it, £1,500 a month for 10Mbps dedicated + A 42U Rack Cabinet ... well thats a steal

Ah, so UK2 do use BandX then. A couple of us were idly speculating how they could offer ADSL for under £20 and not take a huge loss. BandX got mentioned as a possible (most likely) bandwidth supplier.

Latency isnt a good indicator to your netowrk performance. I can get a better latency on a 56k than some people can on their ADSL connections. This is because I turn down details, I turn off information. I manipulate my TCP/IP stack prediction to allow blind packets rather than order them. I turn off error checking. I remove invalid packet resend. All this tweaking helps. Maybe it is the people who do the legwork that get the lowest ping, latency, game speed etc.

This means that I can consistantly get in game latencies of between 120 and 150 in TFC (i'm an old schooler) Now then. CPU usages, GFX settings, Time of day can all affect latencies. I have seen ISDN get 30 ingame. It may be a freak occurance but certainly when I had ISDN i had no complaints what so ever. It was expensive but it was more stable than 56k, more consistant.

ISDN is probably used more than broadband - easily. Near enough every call center in the UK will use ISDN bundles. You can multiplex ISDN (real ISDN 2e not HH hybrid) by sending data down the D channel to describe what to do in the B channel. Check out dragon technologies for stuff they do, particularly the dragonbox. You could run an entire office phone system of a single ISDN.

ISDN is versatile. It is fast enough and 128k is plenty bandwidth for the average surfer. Granted your 650Mb ISO images wont come down too quick (I prefer Mandrake personally) but then again with download managers they will happily download whilest you sleep.

Sick of being shut out of ISPs for over use? Surf SMART get an AOL account for surfing and a Demon account for your gaming. £30 gets you 24/7 surfing with 12 hours on each account. IE6 works fine with AOL and so does DAP. Pages load fairly quick but dont use the standard AOL settings - use your own initialisation strings, come to think of it use them to set up your modem/TA that way you can eke out as much performance as you can.

Just because you cant get 30 ping doesnt mean that you cant. I could only get 50+ consistantly but then again I didnt spend all day tweaking.

Also dont forget that a more reliable ISP will yield you better tweaking than an oversubscribed one.

Kitty, I am not a 'representative' of UK2.NET, BAND-X or any other service. I just think their services are better/well cheaper than others.

And yes, UK2.NET do use Band-X for bandwidth. As does my company, alongside our CLARA.NET co-lo connection :)

Ok thanks for clearing that up.

We just have to try to keep the reps identified so members know they are there to help.

The lowest consistent ping I've had on ISDN is 28, this was under Quakeworld, which too date still has the best netcode for online gaming I think. The ISP was Claranet and on a Barrysworld server. There are many factors why my ping sux now, firstly I play MOHAA which has a rather s****y netcode, secondly FRIACO and thirdly ISP's seem to have stopped supporting compression.

I don't think it's ISDN that has gone downhill, it's the ISP's and BT forcing FRIACO on us, which is tripe for games. And of course 95% of us ISDN users have no alternative cos BT and NTL/Telewest have no interest in our area, I blame the government, you may just say it's gamming and browsing which aren't important, but I feel Broadband will become more and more essential in the future.

As ever I end ranting about lack of ADSL hehe.

hey i live in a broadband rich area of wiltshire, its just that every town around mine is enabled and mine isnt and that SUCKS.............

hehe :)

What an interesting post, all with more notions idea's and symptoms for high/low isdn ping, ive had isdn a while now over multiple OS and find with most others that pci isdn is king.Ive had 4 isp's this year and pings varied considerably with each, lowest being [CS in all cases]sniffout[when quiet] before the boom, there i had a regular sub 50 ping, i live less than 1k from exchange. Finally im at claranet,in my opinion over priced and under performing[hr limits and redials/drops],around 70 pings in CS[fluctuates].Only 1 thing you all need to consider here also is how much mechanical interfierence lines suffer,BT will not completely relay a line box to box[a manhole to most people]when an excavator rips through it,they simply rejoin it making for even worse latency.I oughta know about this sorta thing ive been a plant operator for like 15 yrs and hey ive pulled a few cables, sad but true, sorry for adding mseconds to pings nationwide...

Im a new ISDN user, and i have the BT Homehighway Box. i have been on the look out for a good isp for a while, and i currently use 2.

i applied firstly to a 128k anytime package, and my pings varied from 120-150. this was because i didnt have a pci adapotor, when i bought 1, my ping went down to 70 ish.

then, i decided to try a pay as u go package, which waz FREESERVE.

when i connected on this at 64k, my ping was an amazing 40. now, if you dont believe me i have screenshots to prove it. this is mainly due to the pay as you go line being never engajed, and the anytime line quite alot of the time

i think that ping depends on alot, from hardware to the isp. if u wish 2 see my ping of 40, contact me and i will show u in a counter-strike server. use MSN messenger, my id is jomil100@hotmail.com

big shout out 2 bud :p tis me, Jon
