Signal booster questions on offshore drilling rig

Hi everyone ive got some questions about the above title. Im in saudi waters and the mobile provider is mobily. The tower is like 10km away and we get signal here but it goes up and down. So we got a samsung signal booster with antenna and it might be helping and might not be too. Im really not sure. Im only interested in 3g data.
So what is the best antenna would yall say would be the best. And this is a steel drilling rig so do u think that would cause interference.
Thanx for any help
Nick

I think DTMark may have more experience of this one (hopefully he spots this post), although boosting an already weak signal will be challenging, but it very much depends upon the band being used, over what amount of frequency, its power and weather / other obstructions. Some mobiles can connect to towers much further away than 10km, but it depends on various factors.

At this point it would also help to know what "samsung signal booster" and antenna you have? Positioning of the antenna is also important as you'd want it to be at the furthest edge of the rig (i.e. no metal beams should cross its view), as high as possible and pointing towards the cell tower.

A quick look suggests that Mobily uses 900MHz + 1800MHz for 2G, as well as 2100MHz for 3G and part of the 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands for 4G. Assuming this hasn't changed (it might well have done) then the use of 2100MHz could be a struggle at 10KM away and any 3G booster / repeater + antenna that you buy must support that band.

On the Antenna front you'll probably want something like this.

Certainly one problem you have may be with the fact that you're working and living inside a big concrete and metal cage, with lots of electrical and other forces that are likely to be causing interference. It might be worth testing the booster at its closest point to the antenna to see if the issue is the booster/repeater or the fact that the antenna isn't good enough.

On that side I'm really not sure what to recommend, although if the issue is with the booster / repeater then you might be able to cheat and circumvent some of the interference woes. You could do this by finding the point where the 3G signal is strongest and then connecting into a 3G router, which could distribute the Internet side via the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi bands instead. Of course this might not help at all :).
