sky has finally done it.....TRAFFIC SHAPING

traffic "shaping" in peak times on high users even on 20mb "lies unlimited":mad::mad:

what ass-wipes, funny how no-one knows yet.how long will they deny this one for???

On the Sky Broadband Unlimited package? I have that at home and haven't yet seen any shaping, although sometimes I do find that rebooting the router after a big new game download or update from Steam helps performance. What package are you on and do you notice it affecting all of your services or just particular things (e.g. P2P)?

Feel free to post your router stats (attenuation, noise margin etc.) as the line details might also highlight a problem.

You're still a Sky user then? Even though you were recommending everyone should "ditch sky" a few months ago:- http://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/showthread.php?t=30467

I've seen a few posts showing congestion on some exchanges over the last month or so, but I think it was supposed to have been sorted.

If your connection is genuinely being traffic shaped, then I'd be interested to know roughly how many gig you download per month.

definately capped, been through this before with virgin

well they are so stupid they have credited me 80 quid.no idea why,it says rebate for calls unlimited cancelation, which i havn't.

20mb max bb.
i dont care what they think is excessive, 1tb+ a month isnt massive or huge or atronomoical and all the other words they throw at you.and eh-huh hum, they sold me hard on the no-fup (use it as you like no limits no restrictions) bull.
nothing wrong at my exchange or bendy adsl wires nonsense.other sky neighbours with in 10meters are not being capped

they had tied me in to a tiny ip range mainly manchester a while back,i got round this by changing the router and setup new mac, then i had ip's all over again,2 days ago my ip was limited to manchester again and i have runng speedtests and getting as little as 4mb in peak times, they tried their excuses, but in 2 years i have had no less than 16mb mostly 20mb 24/7

rung them and they tell me i'm on traffic shaping, throttling my bandwidth between 5pm and 12am,regardless that i am on 20mb max.3% high uses yak yak yak heard all this before from virgin media

right now my speed is capped at 4mb and later it jumps back up....
more than a hundred speedtests done speedtests.net

A terabyte per month is an awful lot for a consumer ADSL service. You can only download about 6TB or so per month on a maxed out ADSL2+ connection. Just a few years back a typical ISP's limit would be 40GB per month, or less, and there was a theoretical 50:1 contention ratio.

If Sky are managing very heavy user's connections, then I can't say I'm too surprised, and I'd rather they did that, than put their prices up. Although they should stop selling it as totally unlimited if they are.

Are they actually using shaping though, I would have thought it more likely, that they'd do the typical unlimited ISP thing of putting very heavy users on a "bad boy pipe", with an above average bandwidth allocation for the number of users, so that they can say that they are not throttling, as your speeds are limited by each other's usage.

.

no its not traffic shaping, its identical to VM traffic management or "the badboy pipe"lol.,they are just calling it traffic shaping, nice spin on words,no i am not surprised either.

my bandwidth is fully capped to 4mb across the board in peak times.p2p ftp caputt.

we know how these companies work,i will say i had a good run,but it is really time to find a company that will leave peoples bandwidth alone for a while again.for people like me on sky its over.

and seriously...... i would pay any amount to have an ISP leave me the f... alone.
i can eat 150gb a day for breakfast. and why shouldn't we? you don't get this crap in other countries.

you can veiw all what i am saying in the blackhat forums

Firstly 1TB+ is a huge amount of data for a consumer connection but I do 100% agree that they should definitely not be advertising a "truly unlimited" service that is supposedly free of any restrictions and at the same time imposing limits.

Beefy, though I don't agree with your level of data consumption hehe, I do think there's some news to be had here in light of the forthcoming ASA rules. Would you be willing to PM (private message) me your name or sky username so I can chase this with Sky and find out why they're misleading customers?

Spoke to Sky and asked them very generally about this, including mentioning some of the time scales and restrictions that you've (OP) highlighted. Sky assured me that there were no restrictions or traffic management on their network, adding that "It's central to our commitments around unlimited usage and consistency of speeds."

They then flatly said that any "suggestion that we are traffic managing customers is wrong". I did ask them generally about any kind of restriction and that was the reply. So it's your word against theirs on that point (unless there's some proof, like a recorded conversaion?).

So far we aren't seeing any mass complaints about slow speeds from their LLU users (beyond the norm), except those affected by the recent localised congestion problems.

Maybe it is just that there's one or two other extremely heavy sky users on the same exchange as the OP, causing localised congestion.

If the OP is being managed, he'll likely have some differences in the routing to other Sky users on the same network (sky now have two, the original Easynet one and a new fully unbundled) : a few traceroutes to popular sites might show it up.

Think I'll point Sky to that post and ask for their input.

UPDATE: Hmm, after having read through that topic I think we'll leave it alone. Some evidence is required and the OP in that topic hasn't responded to help clarify. We've seen no evidence of any limited or widespread disconnections, yet, for downloading too much on Sky's Unlimited package.

Why would this be the case? The DPI technology would just impose a limit for the 'naughty people'... all done in software.

Traffic from good user = policy A = no limit

Traffic from naughty user = policy B = impose rate limit for X
