Sky Max

Hi

Just moving over to Sky from TalkTalk for broadband - getting a 60mb fttc connection atm as fttp not yet available in my area - that another story !!!

Wondering about going with Sky Max - as I understand it you get a better router with wireless repeaters to cover every nook and cranny in your house and get better control over your WiFi network - i.e. you can turn it off at certain time so the kids can not use it after hours.

Could anyone comment on these facilities - if in fact you can turn WiFi off and on at certain times - does this disable it for everyone or do you have different userid's for example you might want to turn it off at 8pm for the kid but keep it active for the adults.

Thanks in anticipation of your help

My understanding is that it may work similar to the Sky broadband buddy they killed off some time ago?

I'd look closely at what speed they guarantee in every room before paying any extra - you may be amazed that such slow speeds still constitute "WiFi coverage in every room" in their opinion. With a 60Mbps connection the drop off may not be so bad but with FTTP speeds it is a joke. I'd buy your own reasonable spec Mesh Kit and you can (keep) use that with FTTP in the future with any ISP. It has been a few years since I had a Sky router but I think you could set filters by MAC address to isolate devices for hours of your choosing at obviously zero cost.

At £ 10 / month Sky Wifi Max offering is NOT good value for money. As @TBM mentioned you will be better off buying your own Wifi mesh kit and setting it uo yourself so you know what you get. In addition to this wifi mesh kits that don't use internet backhaul (where all the wifi access points are wired) have limited reach and realiability. For a true rock solid solution you need to have ethernet to every access point.

In terms of limiting the wifi to certain hours I wouldn't go that route since those measures are very easy to bypass and only work until the kids get their own device with a SIM with data, something most secondary kids have these days. So in other words you are doing it wrong. You need invest time and setup time limits in each specific device they use, both iOS and Android support parent controls which can set specific times of the day where devices can not be used. There is no silver bullet with parent controls, you need to get involved.

To get top speed I'd agree that ethernet backhaul is a must, but not having stone walls or three floors to get through or anything else out of the ordinary I've found my Decos are rock solid reliable and the range is way more than acceptable only using WiFi backhaul. Having said that I did have to wire the SkyQ and Minis to the Decos and turn the Q WiFi off to prevent frequent SkyQ hissy fits.
