Slate roof — 4G signal attenuation

With that Tower probably easier to book an appointment with The Almighty One for a few Lightning strikes here and there. ;)
Excellent.

In actual fact, there have been two lightning strikes near us in the last three that have affected the (copper) BT lines that run from the local exchange. The first blew several people’s master sockets off walls and fried several routers and part of the exchange (and also caused a mains transformer to explode). The one last year wasn’t quite as bad, but did still cook several routers, including ours.

Which, as well as the fact that our ADSL is only c.17Mbps, is why 4G is quite important here. Although I won’t be putting my forthcoming parabolic dishies on a long metal pole on our house …. 🌩️⚡🔥

Just to revisit your question:

Is the first sentence a clue? Is it a PoE splitter (i.e. the reverse of a PoE injector), to both power a router and give it an Ethernet connection?

Yes, PoE splitter, drop down to 12VDC buck converter and a "super" capacitor as the B535 is a greedy old device and kept dropping the voltage when it powers on.

That's what happened to our TalkTalk line and blew the telephone up that was connected to it at the time!

Apparently those faults are not direct lightening strikes but are instead caused by induced current in the long parallel lines from a nearby strike. There are supposed to be filters/aggressors fitted to the BT master socket, but as usual BT never fitted them to my property until after the fact! If you are any way competent, I would advise buying one and installing it to protect your home equipment. The BT NTE5C's are almost tool-less and very easy to fit. The faceplate just clicks off and you can get faceplate with broadband filter built in the MK4 I believe. You can buy the entire kit back box, NTE5C and filtered face plate for under £15.

With the earth's core slowing down and stopping, and might even reverse the other way, this may cause issues with the earth's magnetic field and therefore the protective umbrella that provides us from the solar winds. We might be having some electro magnetic radiation getting through that might cause disruption in power and communications in the coming years! Hurry up with the fibre roll out!!
