Slow internet connection/Download speeds with Huawei B535

Well, not sure what I did but it’s fixed and getting a reasonable speed down in the router. It’s not the same as in the phone but I put it down to the signal not being as strong in the router...
But now things like my Alexa, Blink cameras, Sonos don’t work... 😩

What APN settings did you use, specifically only set IPv4 or left it auto? IPv6 might be causing your issues there (or it could be due to double-NAT, however that'd be the first time I've heard that has affected those services)

Standard EE APN settings (everywhere eescure etc)
no option for IPv6 in b525 settings as far as I can tell

Try adding a new APN with those same settings - in the create APN section it’ll show you IPv4 only if it’s not been restricted by the carrier where the B525 came from.

EE and Three both have 1TB fair use limits on their unlimited plans.

EE's unlimited SIM is 35 quid a month. It says it's for phones but you're allowed to use it in whatever device you want, no matter if they persuade you otherwise. They just dont market it to broadband customers for obvious reasons.
FYI, if anyone takes an EE 'unlimited' contract now (from 2nd Sept onwards) you'll have a 600GB/month fair use policy applied as they've updated their Ts&Cs

EE Ts&Cs
We will consider usage above 600GB/month to be non-personal use and have the right to apply traffic management controls to deprioritise your mobile traffic during busy periods or to move you to a business plan.

Have a look at the EE business unlimited SIM only deal - there's no cap (although I'm not sure whether they actually enforce the personal plan cap), and it is actually cheaper than the personal SIM only deal. I've been using one as a broadband replacement for 6 months now.

Good to know. Do you need anything specific 'qualify' as a business?

Also, should have mentioned that EE have now swapped their annual contract price increase from using RPI to using CPI+3.9%! (for new contracts and upgrades).

You can be a sole trader and they don't need any business documents or bank account, so no qualifying requirements that I am aware of. I do have a business, and I wanted broadband that I could let customers use, so I went with the business unlimited phone SIM that they suggested.

I’ve never understood this - why are they allowed to label something as unlimited if they want to set a limit of 600GB?

If they don’t want people using more than 600GB data it should be labelled as a 600GB plan.

They could follow the approach of some other countries network operators and label all plans as unlimited basic data and have a 600GB high speed allowance if they want to play the 'unlimited, but is it?' game.

I have been having exactly the same problems with my new B535 router so I have just gone back to my old B315s-22 router and download speed has jumped from 2mbps to 31mbps (same sim card, same external aerial) so I will stick with the old router.

I had an email from somebody who asked me to post this here, not sure if it'll help:

I've been suffering the same sudden slow down in speed with my Huawei router (although it's a B525 and not B535) with a Three sim.

What worked for me was to restore the router to factory defaults but beware, you'll reset the admin (front-end login) password as well as your SSID password (if you've changed them from the defaults, that is).

This worked a treat for me and my speeds went from 1-5Mbs to 60-70Mbs!

I've also disabled the auto-update - I know that's not the best policy but I'll leave the router like this for a few weeks and if it proves stable then I'll enable auto-update and see if the problem re-occurs.

I have joined just to pass on some info.
I used to have a B312 and had this issue of speeds not much better than 17mb/s. Three suggested to me to go into the connection settings on the router and change it to '4g only'.
I did this but lost use of the voip phone socket so changed it back. I didn't really see much of an improvement (from 17 to 25)

I thought nothing of it and forgot about the trick when I then recieved my b535, but continued getting poor speeds of 14-20mb in the day with (very) occasional huge jumps to 60mb at night.

Having established my unifi network was not to blame for the speed, I tried the same little setting in the b535, tucked away under:
Network settings> Mobile network searching (device then freezes for a minute)> preferred network mode> 4g only.

I am now achieving a solid and reliable 50mb/s

I've had mine set to 4g only for a long time. Unfortunately this didn't help me.

My main issue is odd. The router just seems to bog down. When my streaming starts to buffer/cache, I stop my stream (so it's not taking up bandwidth) and do a speed test on WiFi from my phone. Often it's ~10 Mbps. Then I'll disconnect my phone, do a speed test directly on the Three network and it'll usually be well over 30mbps. Often closer to 60. Restart my router and usually I'll be able to watch my stream, and get the same results as the phone for an hour or two. Then it happens again.

Basically I just restart my router 3+ times a day (whenever I have the slow down) and it'll work for a while.

This is a common complaint with Three. Restarting your device seems to reset whatever traffic management is happening on your line.

Likely. Not sure what they're doing exactly though. It's not packet analysis. At least not useful deep packet analysis because of the VPN

Well i've gone from 5G 300mbits or more on three down to 4G and getting 1 or 2 megabits (never more than 5) for at least 5 days now. Resetting my router does nothing (Huawei E5172). I get the same result in my phone too.

Using a VPN doesn't fix it either, I wish i had not gone back to three. But their speed tests looked good when i tried them before buying.

That's how they get you ;)

In all seriousness though if it was okay before it may just be that they're changing things or doing some tests.

On the other hand, network coverage does reduce it's footprint as more users start using it but it's probably a bit early in 5G's life for that to happen..

You don't need 5G users to deplete a poor backhaul, but could well be some technical malfunction, too.. .

I think you're describing cell-breathing here, where the coverage of a cell dynamically reduces when it determines it is overloaded. That is a 3G thing- it doesn't happen with 5G (or 2G/4G) - their footprint isn't variable.

That's exactly what I meant - didn't realise it was only a 4G thing. Thanks.
