Slow speed- is my line capped at 512k?

Hi guys, having only ever had a 512k connection in the past, I've just switched to O2 8Mb broadband. I have a pc using Xp and a new laptop running vista and I'm using the wireless router supplied by O2. Only problem is that my download speed when I test it on various sites always seems to come back at 512k. The upload speed, however, is coming back at 820k. Would love to check this on the bt speedtest site but have so far been unable to do so as it's always busy. Ive done all the spyware and malware checks etc and full virus scan with avg with nothing found.

O2 have been incredibly helpful but we don't seem to be getting anywhere. Thank god tech support is a freephone number! They tell me I should be able to get 2Mb speeds on my line but they can see from their own tests that I'm not getting anywhere near that. They have raised a fault with BT who have replaced my "equipment" at the exchange (Hove- showing as green on the exchange check and 1 mile away from me) but this hasn't cured anything. I've plugged into the master socket and nothing changes.

It seems a bit odd that the reading always comes back at 512k though... is my line possibly stuck at 512k or something?

Anybody any ideas about what i can try next?

Can you find you modems stats and post them for us to see them.

The old BT profile for 512k shouldn't still be on now you are no longer on BTs network.

snap Peter same time to post :D but you just beat me.

Just spoke to O2 and they tell me that my router does not show stats. It's a speedtouch 580 they think.

Did you remove the old drivers and stuff from the previous ISP?

It doesn't sound like O2 know much about your system. Who supplied your router? You need an analyst to check out your hardware and drivers:

Get drivers from the hardware maker's site if you think you need them. If O2 supplied the router they should have given you an update automatically when you connected and kept you up to date.

Still trying to sort this out. The line was down all day yesterday while they were working on it.

The modem is a speedtouch 580 supplied by O2 and they sent an update to it a few days ago. I dont see how I can remove drivers related to the previous ISP when I didnt install any in the first place... I had a different router which was set up for my previous ISP- all i did on the pc was find the wireless signal and log on to it.

I worked out how to get router to show stats:

downstream: 1149 kbit/s (supposed to be 8Mb!)
upstream: 962 kbit/s
output Power Down: 16.0 dBm, Up: 12.0 dBm
line Attenuation Down: 51.0 dB, Up: 26.0 dB
snr Margin Down: 9.5 dB, Up: 9.0 dB

However, testing my connection on various speedtest sites gives my download speed approx 440Kbit/s and upload speed approx 700Kbit/s - i.e upload is faster than my download!
