Slow upload speeds in Southampton

Interestingly I moved from a fixed IP back to CGNAT a few days ago and hadn't thought to do a speed test (why would I?). I done a couple this morning and noticed the upload is peaking at 275Mbps~. On my fixed IP I was getting full 900Mbps speeds. So perhaps the "fault" is to do with their CGNAT machines.

I'll raise a ticket with them today.

My connection has been back to normal 900+ up & down speeds for a few weeks now. Interesting they've still got problems in part of the network.

I used prefix of 0 / default and IPv6 is working. ping bbc.co.uk shows IPv6.
Aside: BBC doesn't actually support IPv6. They cheat just so they can get a green tick on the domain.

You're right that "bbc.co.uk" does work on IPv6, but it does nothing except return a HTTP redirect to "www.bbc.co.uk". And "www.bbc.co.uk" is IPv4-only :-(

Code:
% curl -v https://bbc.co.uk
*   Trying [2a04:4e42::81]:443...
* Connected to bbc.co.uk (2a04:4e42::81) port 443
...
< HTTP/2 301
...
< location: https://www.bbc.co.uk/

Interesting as speeds low for my folks and they're on CGNAT. Did you get a response from support?

They've not responded yet but theyre probably winding down for Christmas. I'm not too bothered so will chase it in the New Year if I get no response by then. Still getting 270~ upload on every speed test I do.

So we're having a similar issue and i've had a number of very frustrating interactions with Toob over the last month.

Speedtest to the Toob server shows 900 down, c.100 up over a wired connection and as low as 60 down, 0.5 up over wireless. Connect to any other server on speedtest and the numbers are 900/900 over wired.

Toob maintain that this is because the speedtest server for Toob is not working correctly, however its completely representative of the speeds we've been getting since our IP address was changed at the start of December. For reference we don't pay for a static IP address so we're in a CGNAT cluster.

At first they tried to deny our IP address had changed but when I proved it too them they said it was purely coincidence that since then we've had garbage upload speeds.

They're arguing that because when you speedtest to a different server (ie fareham or IoW) you get good speeds there is no issue.

Very intrigued to see if you get a resolution to the issue. So far they've replaced our router and fibre box and it's not made a blind bit of difference.

If doing a speed test to any speed test site results in expected speeds then there is nothing wrong.

What do you get here:

Sorry it took me a while to respond. Tried a speedtest to the site that you recommended, see the screenshot above.

This is fairly consistent with the Ookla speedtest when directed at the Toob Server.

Since the change of IP Address at the start of December this has been representative of the speeds we're getting across all devices in the house over both wired and wireless connections. Toob maintain that it is just their speedtest server reporting incorrect results.

However uploading a 450MB file over a wired connection direct from the Fibre Box took nearly an hour whereas before the IP address change it would have been less than a minute.

I can confirm speedtests with any other server yields full 900Mbps upload speedtests. The Toob server gives me 300Mbps~.

How embarrassing for them that their customers only get a bad result on their own speedtest server. I've not actually tried uploading anything to test if the speeds are good but assume they will be.

I'll be intrigued to see what your real world performance is in terms of uploading. Ours is reflective of the Toob speedtest results or worse.

If you can give me something to test I will do- trouble is I rarely upload anything. I've just uploaded a 2GB file to mega.nz at a rate of 30MB/sec~ (so around 350Mbps) but I don't trust that mega will let me saturate my upload as it has never saturated the download when I've used it.

As if to illustrate the ridiculousness of it (Serverhouse vs Toob results).

So we've now disabled IPv6 and our speedtest results to all servers are now 900 down, c.130ish up.

My partner is the one being badly affected by this as she regularly has to upload large files for work and over wifi she is getting upload speeds of about 0.85Mbps. In some instances it means she can't even send emails with attachments. However if she is uploading to a dedicated server then the speeds are fine, but if she's uploading to the internet it regularly just fails. As an example if she tries to upload a 1mb file to icloud or an online pdf converter it simply fails.

This is affecting every device in the house both wired and wireless and as far as we're aware we've not changed any settings (other than disabling IPv6 as mentioned).

Any thoughts? Toob still say there is no issue, do we think there are any router settings that could be affecting this?

Purely out of interest have you tried connecting a device directly to the Toob ONT (therefore bypassing the router)? I can't imagine any router settings would be causing your issue but this would be a worthwhile test. The ONT will assign your PC an IP via DHCP so no other configuration would be required from your side.

An old post, sorry, but has anyone else still had this issue with the slow upload speeds?

Since the last couple of outages on Tuesday's I checked my speed using Ookla (and others) and whilst download is a healthy 900+ Mbps the upload has dropped to just 160 Mbps.

This is on Ethernet using a good TP Link router where the last time I performed a speed test it was 900+ both down and up.

I've also tried plugging a different machine direct into the Fibre Optical box and the speed is just the same.

I've logged a call with Toob, but nothing has improved.

After 2 weeks of chasing via phone calls we eventually got an engineer out to the property and they diagnosed a faulty ONT box.
It was unusual the engineer said but fingers crossed that has resolved it.
