So i ventured back into Windows land...

To reformat and reinstall my family computer (usual reasons) and now there are a couple of caveats (although not all windows specific);

Occasionally the start menu is unresponsive (maybe about half a second). The strange thing is, if i delete all the apparently dead end registry entries, then the start menu becomes really responsive, but the taskbar settings are lost after reboot, especially the toolbar settings.

Why is it, after I applied the new version of Autopatcher 5.6 (may 2007) and all the critical and recommended were installed, windows still downloaded around another 40 megs of updates? Did i miss a checkbox or two or something?

Is there a reason for people not using the limited account more often? After using linux, and looking at the user privelages for most people's home computer (basically everything), I realised how vulnerable everything is. So should I set up a passworded admin account and a unpassworded limited account or has other people encountered problems with this set up?

thanks

I think I've said this before about windows. On a standard windows installation every user has admin rights, as does any malware that finds it's way onto your pc. Probably the best way forward is as you say have one admin account and then all other accounts have limited "rights" thus limiting changes to the registry and limiting what can and cannot be installed. A similar approach is enabled by default in vista - but here everyone has admin rights but at least the system does ask for your permission before any system changes are made. However the danger here is that you become a bit blasé and just click ok without necessarily reading the dialogue box - but I suppose it's better than nothing.

So to answer your question - yes it probably would be a good idea to do day to day stuff using accounts having limited admin privileges.
