Some devices can't access Internet (LYCA Mobile Unlimited Data) but some can.

Hi All,

I have been successfully using an unlimited data LYCA Mobile sim in a Huawei 5G Win mobile router (plus Cisco APs for WiFi) for my broadband for around 4 to 5 months now. This has provided internet connections for two mobile phones, a tablet, my pc, a tv, an internet radio, an OpenMediaVault media server and a BT YouView box.

I've just come back from a week's holiday and some devices get internet access (2 x mobiles, pc and tablet) but others (tv, internet radio, OpenMediaVault media server and BT YouView box) do not.

As some of the devices that don't work have wired connections then I can rule out the WiFi as a problem. As I can successfully access services and see the devices across the LAN I believe I can rule out it being the network switch as a problem (although I have swapped ports around to check).

I've factory reset and reconfigured the Huawei 5G router and the internet again works fine from my pc, across WiFi, through the network switch, and via the 5G router to the Internet. A recent nPerf test from my pc showed speeds of 200Mb/s down, 55Mb/s up, 36ms latency.

Mobile phones and tablet also still working fine but the other devices still fail to access the Internet.

My feeling is that something has either changed with my LYCA Sim/Account or the LYCA/EE Mobile network.

Anyone else suffered a similar problem or have any ideas what could be causing this?

I have a feeling I'll not get much help from LYCA Customer Services.

Many thanks

No idea what the problem is, but if you think it's something on their end, maybe test with another SIM (the one on your phone, for example)?

Also, you may want to start looking for alternatives:

I was thinking of trying my phone's sim when I get chance in the next couple of days. It's not unlimited data so I'm wary on how much testing I'll be able to do.

I did try several mobile sims from other providers to see which performed the best in the 5G router. The LYCA sim was head and shoulders above all the others. I could move to EE but the difference in cost is a factor here.

UW unlimited at £23 could be worth a try? Has full EE access.

I meant using the other SIM just to see if all devices would connect to the internet, since you think it might be something on Lyca/EE side. That shouldn't use too much data.

What I (and I think most of those here using EE for broadband) do is to use a Scancom EE SIM from Amazon. You have to pay upfront, but it costs ~£14 a month for unlimited EE service (after 600GB traffic is de-prioritised and you lose 5G until the reset date, but it keeps working).

A lot of money to lay out for a Scancom sim that may not work:

Bought this product in May last year with a ZTE 5G router, it's worked perfectly until a little over a week ago, now it wont connect to EE whilst in the router, if I take the sim out and put it in the phone (S22 Ultra and a Samsung M53) it works fine. I read online someone else had the same problem, I bought a new 5G router (GL-X3000 (Spitz AX)) and it still does not work. I wrote to Scancom but they don't seem interested, they have been flooded with complaints with the same problem, and suggest I change my router. I tried that. I am now stuck with a prepaid sim card (Till 08/01/2025) that I don't really need. Surprised Amazon still sell this product.
***UPDATE*** I got a reply from Scancom: "We have had many users experience difficulties with 4 different makes of routers:
Huawei
TP Link
ZTE
GL-X3000.
It is something to do with their settings that does not fully allow the EE sims to function".
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!!!

Lyca is fine, the scaremongering about fraud etc and blame to Lyca is based on a small minority, whereas myself and others have also had fraudulent attempts on cards NOT related to Lyca, so wouldn’t put much thought into it if it works for you.

Anyway, it’s worth going through your router settings and make sure IPV6 is disabled, I’ve had issues in the past with EE and IPV6 active, resulting in issues with some streaming services or gaming services.

Following a switch off, everything worked as normal. A local network or router upgrade may have caused the settings to change so it’s worth a look.

Edit: I have an EE scancom sim, running in a 5G router since January this year and not had any issues other than the above.

I did toggle ipv6 on recently and everything worked fine but I disabled it again because I couldn’t be bothered with the hassle if something did stop working.

I get 5G all day long from a mast less than 200 meter away.

Definitely been over 600gb and don’t believe I’ve ever been speed restricted or other.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!!!

You have 14 days to cancel/return it to Amazon.

Even excluding the data breach, dosen't Lyca still have big latency issues at certain times (400+ms).

It would make online gaming and video calling unusable.

Thank you CarlO1460. I think you may have cracked the problem, as all the devices that work (in the main) are operating IPV6 and those that aren't are not set up for it.

The WAN interface on the Huawei Router is working IPV6 and not IPV4.

My problem now is that I cannot find where the IPV6 settings are on the Huawei 5G WIN router???

A quick search online:

Go to More Functions > Network Settings > IPv6. Click the IPv6 switch to enable or disable the feature.

It should be within your apn settings to move to ipv4 only.

Thank you for the suggestion CarlO1460. However, I could not find these options on the Web Interface for the Huawei 5G WIN Router (H312-371).

The only option I found was to swap Mobile Profiles for the Internet Connection.
The EE Internet Profile was default and had IPV4 & IPV6 working set. I was unable to change this setting.

The other profile was Auto. This just had IPV4 and, again, I was unable to change this option.

In the end, I made Auto the default profile, reset the router and Bingo! Everything back up and working.

Thank you so much for your help, and for everyone else's contributions. It has all been greatly appreciated.

I think it is now worth going for the Scancom EE sim from Amazon. As has been suggested, I do have the option of returning the sim if there are issues. If it does work it does represent a significant saving over the LYCA Unlimited sim.

You should also be able to create a new apn, and just stick some EE settings in, ipv4 only and then set as default (maybe).

But great to hear all is back to normal.

I've just created a new APN, as you've suggested.
I think it's got basically the same settings as the existing EE profile.
However, this time it has let me select it to be just IPV4.
Perfect!
Thank you again.
