just as l thought everything was going well... my main computer fries!!!

well lm unsure if it has completely fried, but one thing l can be sure about is there is no display, last night l was using it and all of a sudden the display freezed and when l pressed the reset button all l got were bios beeps... acquired a new gfx card tried it in both PCI-E slots removed ram, even the PCI sound card and nada, same beeps nothing more... left to assume that my whole PCI-E slot has gone potty... as l cant think of anything else to try.

Check your motherboard manual, there is usually a mention of how many bios beeps equal a specific error. It could also be your Power Supply Unit, which next to the GPU and HD, are the most common items to fail.

nada in the manual, checked the ASUS website, according to them its memory, however according to my mate who has a similar board to me (and is more knowledgeable and used to work in a comp shop) its a graphics issue (lm assuming he looked it up as well... then again lm sure there are differences between bioses and l forget what mine is...

either way lm going to have to change the board l think, as l cannot even with new memory get things to boot, just the constant beeeep beep beep...

Don't suppose you have a CPU to try a swap with?

I've seen it before when you just can't explain it the CPU being goosed throws up stupid errors that point to something it isn't.

(this assumes you have tried Mark's PSU suggestion.... On ASUS boards the most common I have seen is a gubbed PSU. (Unless the Proc is AMD))

Best test is everything out only PSU, Board, Proc and 1 DIMM. Check if it posts. If not then your options are limited to one of them.

problem is l have no display at all.. according to both Bios central and Phoenix (my bios is Award Bios) there is only actually one beep code which consists of one long two short.. which means there is a video error.. any other type of beeps are usually ram related.

tbh l cant think of it being anything other than my PCI-E slots going dead as l cant get any display off either PCI-E slot (l have SLI) and nothing changed after removing all PCI cards, the beeps also stayed the same when l removed the ram completely.. so the likely issue is on the motherboard and since l dont have onboard display lm kinda left with a computer that just beeps lol, tho l do admit to playing with the Heatsink a few days back, in fact l changed to a new one and the temps were pretty amazing if l do say so, it was a good 10C drop...

when my mate has a chance l plan on talking motherboards with him and try and get the best deal possible for as low price as possible, only requirements are that it have 6+ Sata, SLI a plus, and might grab some ram since l have a little cash to spare now and might contemplate a processor/heatsink but we shall see all the rest of the components l have (pretty sure my power supply isnt the issue tho).

Hi Timeless,

You could try this first, disconnect your hard drive and any cd/dvd rom's. So you are checking the motherboard, memory and bios. If your pc still fails to boot try removing one stick of memory if you have more than one. This test will give you some indication where the problem lies.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

regards Paul.

problem is lve already done that T_T, and still no video output..

Hi again,

It looks as if it's either your CPU or the graphics card then. What a nightmare. You will solve it I know.

Regards Paul.

ld assume it to be graphics tbh, before l reset it the the last thing l was doing was watching something and it just jumped on a few seconds of audio over and over, given that l assume the system crashed as it was not providing any more visual output.. ld assume if it were processor that it would have just stopped producing any kind of audio visual output at all..

plus going by the bios manufacturers site it pretty much stated "The only AwardBIOS beep code indicates that a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information. This beep code consists of a single long beep followed by two short beeps. Any other beeps are probably a RAM (Random Access Memory) problems." which is exactly the problem, l dont get visual output at all.

the other site seems to concur with this as well in so many words

Wish I had something helpful to say, I hate hardware problems, and I really hate having to rebuild from the motherboard upwards. :(

l hate doing processors!!! my system worked for a week after l changed the heatsink lol, assume the good temps have nothing to do with my issue.. would have thought it would have died sooner if something were amiss there...

CPU swapping is "sweaty" work even for the most experienced of us lol. You have to apply quite a lot of pressure on some boards and it feels a bit like putting a lit match near a wad of £50 notes :) .

then again its not a worrying as it used to be, back in the day you needed a screwdriver in there to clip it in, with AM2 its just a lever to flip (havent seen the new Intel method but l hear its just as simple now).

as for my system, there wasnt as much money as l thought in there, so lm having to wait a little for job seekers to top it up T_T

Did you disconnect the floppy??
Sounds stupid, but I bought a new mobo a few years ago, and it turned out to be the floppy motor going short circuit and taking the 12v line down.

heh, nope there is no way "at all" it could be that, l havent had a floppy drive connected in my system for years... in fact l havent even got one in the house, back in the day drivers always came on floppys but these days its all CDs so l never saw any point in having one at all...

How long did you wait when swapping out the GFX cards??

I had a scare with my sister's new PC last week, there was a flash as I inserted a USB cable and the whole thing went dead. The problem there was a loose mobo shorting out, but the important thing is; the psu sprang back into life after about 20 minutes; it was dead as a dodo after the flash, and I was convinced it was fcuked.

no flashes, l was watching something and all of a sudden the picture froze and the audio started jumping (basically the last couple of seconds of what l was watching) l reset the box and all l got was Bios beeps..

strangely l think it coincided with the bathroom light being turned off but l believe that was purely coincidence... from there l reset the bios, and still nada at that point l got a friend to do some googleling and all information pointed to a graphics card problem (links earlier in one of my posts point to the beeps l was getting) so that night l removed the bios battery to reset my bios etc, and the next day l went and purchased a new gfx card which didnt resolve the problem, from there l went on to try removing PCI cards and the ram, l thought by removing the ram l would get a different set of beeps however that wasnt the case.. which leads me to believe the PCI-E slots are likely dead, you see l have two (the board supports SLI) so l had tried both slots and got no display..

in any case my box could take more time to fix, tho l know l can get discount.. ld sorta planned upgrading my chip while l was at it so annoyingly l might have to wait a month or so in order to gain enough cash to afford the £170 l need for a new board, processor, and ram (thankfully my new friend at the comp shop is keeping my new hardware warm for me) l just dont know the guy well enough to walk away with it without paying yet lol.. back in wales that would have been different since l was on first name terms with the guys up there and always being invited into their staff rooms for a cuppa and a cigarette lol.

It sounds as if there is only one thing left to try,,,,,

Take out the old mobo, spray paint it with silver or gold paint and try and sell it to the Tate for £75,000.

heh if only that would work, tho if l am clever l am planning a trip to wales if my mate up there is still around l can make £30 or possibly more from recycling the board.
