Sony Xperia Z2 hotspot fails for HTTPS (port 443)

My Sony Xperia Z2 Android 6.0.1 hotspot often fails for HTTPS (port 443) connections, OK for HTTP (port 80), etc. So in failure mode most web browsing impossible but email OK, ping to bbc.co.uk OK.
Sometimes works perfectly after a reboot, often not.
Not an ISP problem, my wife's Samsung phone never has such a problem, she has an identical subscription with TalkMobile (MVNO on Vodafone).
Big problem for me as BT/Openreach has repeatedly failed to provide me a working phone line, but 4G signal is OK,so any help would be appreciated.

At a guess I wonder if that may be because Android v6 is now 4 years old and may not support some of the latest HTTPS encryption standards, although that wouldn't explain why it flops after a reboot. Most sites also have backwards compatibility with older encryption methods.

I assume by hotspot you mean the phone is being run in WiFi hotspot mode. If so, have you considered going to the Google Play store and just trying a third-party WiFi hotspot app instead of using the device default? The hotspot feature is all software managed.

She doesnt use it for browsing, but my mothers Xperia Z2 has multiple bugs.
After the last update, bluetooth randomly switches itself off and refuses to switch back on again until the phone is rebooted.
Yet it will claim BT is on and working, and will list all the BT devices it was connected to as still being visible and connected.

Since it is an old phone, and Sony updates are pretty slow and far apart, it might be an idea to consider a newer phone.
