Spam increasing

Noticed a lot of spam recently.

As I havent signed up for ages (obviously), I was wondering what there is if anything that stops automated signups?

Like perhaps those distorted image things, where you have to type whats in the box for verifacation.

Is there any, and if there is, does that mean these sad acts are actually going through the process of joining up and posting manually just to spam?

seems that GD is installed so the OCR (verification image) is still there, l kinda think it will be worth trying imagemagik (helped elsewhere as it uses a different ID system l believe) seem if that will thwart those bots if they are specific spammers then its hard to do something about a living idiot than a bot one..

It's possible to make those authentication images more complex, but last time I did so the image became so difficult to decipher that it was hard for ordinary people to get the correct conversion =) . If you want me to try increasing it though I can?

be interesting to try.. but l kinda think it worth changing the software that makes the image.. everyone uses GD methinks it might be worth trying imagemagik if you have enough access to the server to install it.

I dont mind, Im not too bothered by it but I figure theres only going to be more as time goes on, and its more work for you and the other mods.

Seemed to be coincidential that it appeared right after more discussions about an N95.

just kinda agrivating that it appeared in like 5 forums >_<

On the one night I was working on graphics so not popping in and out ever 10/15mins sorry all.:(

The new way of reporting posts doesn't email the mods like the old method did which used to alert me to posts being reports as my email client is always open checking every 10 mins.

I've made it a bit more complex and will investigate having 'ImageMagick' installed, although that may have to wait until we've moved servers.

well when you sort it heres how to add (given that you have SSH access)

this should work on linux servers
start with getting the package:
wget ftp://ftp.imagemagick.org/pub/ImageMagick/ImageMagick.tar.gz

once the download is complete

unzip: gunzip -c ImageMagick.tar.gz | tar xvf -

then youll need to get into the folders and configure so basically type the following:

ls (do this to find out the foldername as you will need to know the version appended to the version downloaded within the file)

then
cd ImageMagick-6.?.? (6.?.? been the version located when the ls cmd was run)

then
./configure

then
make

after that its just a matter of typing:
make install

and to test if it installed correctly type:
/usr/local/bin/convert logo: logo.gif

after that just a matter of logging into VB then going VB options and entering the path in where specified which is usually "/usr/local/bin/" heh l installed it the other day first time worked well :D

Yes I've already read the installation guide for it, I just hate touching the server's modules since for some reason 1&1 don't even give managed server clients access to the log file and I need that for diagnosing any bugs that might crop up. One more reason we’ll be leaving them =).

take a look at zipservers currently using them myself they dont seem too bad once you get stuff configed

err very old news, that has been possible since close to the beginning of last year... one of the security forums l was at around that time were talking about methods to upgrade the code for both OCR and captcha however if something gets included on large scale to scripts its obviously going to be hit and cracked, just like from what l hear about vista (the security that determines its locking mechanisms was cracked within about a week of it been on the market or at least there were groups claiming to have unlocked it with keygens and stuff.. altho l forget where l read that story altho it was posted on a large news site)

I added a couple of mandatory custom registration fields to the signup process, now everybody must enter their ISP name and rate them (satisfaction). This won't stop human spammers or the most sophisticated robots but it will limit some of them.

I have two other solutions to use if that doesn't help, although so far I haven't seen much in the way of new spam since doing this a few days ago.
