Spam

In February I switched from Virgin ADSL to BT Internet and whilst I am very pleased with the speeds compared to Virgin, I have notcied that since the switch my spam mail has increased threefold. I am assuming this might have something to do with BT and The Phorm experiments. Has anyone had a similar experience? I have lodged a complaint with BT and I am awaiting their reply.

SPAM is a very dynamic and highly adaptable "attack", which is why around 80 to 90% of all e-mail is made up of it. It's more likely to be the case that some e-mail platforms are under greater attack than others and that some filtering technologies employed may be less effective. In addition the ease at which a robot can guess your e-mail address is another big factor.

I'm not sure about BTs filtering controls but it might be worth investigating whether your e-mail has anti-spam features enabled. In addition, Phorm is mainly about tracking visited websites and not e-mail addresses.

Hmm, no I will tend to agree. We have made some changes to our spam filtering including introducing another server tonight. IMO (well and by the stats) spam has increased markedly in the last perhaps two weeks. We were receiving 200ish messages a minute at the beginning of the month and now it has approx doubled. Even with what I consider good/excellent spam filtering I have personally seen an increase in un-wanted email. Odd really, but the "we have a free atm card" and "you haven't paid your ebay bill" and finally the good old "we've reviewed your bank account details and click here to amend" emails seem to be the favourite BS at the moment.
Having said that, another SpamAssasin server in place and I am pleased to say we have returned to queue deliveries in seconds, rather than the dismal 4 minutes we had mid afternoon. Blooming un-solicited ******

Hm, well my spam increased this week. By 1. Over none. I use my own domain for email and I don't sign up to Russian bride sites with it, although I did get a charming offer the other week :D
I have the utmost sympathy for all John Smiths signed up to BT.
For any bots, my address is youareallscum@ofcom.org.uk
Happy hunting.
