just checked using plusnets own bandwidth test

1824.5, but thats to THIER servers :hrmph:

Is this the one that is 2mbps bitrate, excluding overheads (e.g. the maximum rate you can get is 1.7mbps after taking off the 13% overheads)....?

At this moment in time, test results are this;
Direction
Actual Speed
True Speed (estimated)

Downstream 2239 Kbps (279.9 KB/sec) 2418 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 234 Kbps (29.3 KB/sec) 252 Kbps (inc. overheads)

I did a test on my Plus Net line speed earlier today. The first time I got really bad results but I think it was because another 'puter on the network check for mail automatically. Did the same test again with Outlook closed and got pretty good results.

Andy

ok, done a test this morning at 07:42am (shouldnt be any congestion) and this is what I got

Downstream 1816 Kbps (227.0 KB/sec) 1961 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 241 Kbps (30.1 KB/sec) 260 Kbps (inc. overheads)

a LOT better methinks, i just thin its network congestion at plusnets end tbh as thier speedchecker gave me 1.82 Mbps (07:46am)

so as I see it, Plusnets network is a Bit congested

If you notice, the speed is All over the place from 600Kb to 1.3Mb is what I was getting until the morning where i hit 1961Kb inc overheads, hence my conclusion on Network congestion

Maybe to help members see which is best we should say what service we are using andthe speed we pay for.

OK Kitty - here's my details

On a standard 512 connection I just got:

Downstream 440 Kbps (55 KB/sec) 475 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 210 Kbps (26.3 KB/sec) 226 Kbps (inc. overheads)

On Plus Net ADSL home, which costs £21.99.

Seems pretty good to me. I got slower speeds on Freeserve when they charged £29.99.

Connection Type:- 2048k IPStream Office 2000
Contention:- 20:1
ISP:- PlusNet (sig says it all, lol)
Package:- 2Mb Homeworker Pro Account
Price:- £66.99 (£1 extra included for Domain name)

Downstream 1781 Kbps (222.6 KB/sec) 1923 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 245 Kbps (30.6 KB/sec) 264 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Seems they got it Fixed :D

Your right in that plus nets speed checker probably gives you the speed of You --> PlusNet, but you must remember, this is the only bit they can control.

As is for all ISPs, they can't control outside their own network - so I don't see how you come to it being PlusNet congested.

FYI, They admit there is a problem and they are starting work on part of thier core network tommorrow ;) just letting you know :D

For a decent speed checker, why not use:

http://www.vantage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/v2/v2.htm

I have Telewest Blueyonder 1Mb, and got this from the adslguide speed checker:

Direction------Actual Speed----------True Speed (estimated)
Downstream------992 Kbps (124.0 KB/sec)-1071 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream--------234 Kbps (29.3 KB/sec)--252 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Not bad considering I had Yahoo Messenger, Msn Messenger and ICQ & AOL messenger running.

and through the Vantage test linked above:
Telewest blueyonder - 1Mb Service Server Download:
136KB/s (1088Kb/s) - Superb - much higher than expected

Download through Transparent Cache:
136KB/s (1088Kb/s) - Superb - much higher than expected

Download through alternative Cache (webcache.blueyonder.co.uk):
120KB/s (960Kb/s) - Perfect - running at full speed!

doesnt actually mean there is any problem, just customer service to say they will investigate it for you.

oh but thier is a problem as I'm not the only one affected, you see, this is being covered in Plusnets forum too ;) so its not just waffle from tech support to fob me off :)

Didnt say it was.

I said they will say that to you, and prolly investigate, but that doesnt equal plus net problem.

It may lie outside their control, or maybe users systems or even something to do with BT line.

Hope it gets sorted for you :)
