Speed variations on Three

I'm new to Three. I am finding big speed differences between the morning and evening. I live in Fulham and my cell feed is from aerials about two hundred yards away but not actually visible to the Huawei router.

Speed 1.webp

Yes, the last two evenings have been during the funeral period but I wonder how much that makes a difference.

Any observations friends?

Tony

You may need to take readings at other times of the day. It is most likely that there will be hits at certain times of the day (during rush hours and evening viewing/social media).

In addition, you need to use an app like Net Monster so that you can see what connection you are making at the time of the speed tests (Frequency, CA, Signal etc.

When the mast comes underload other connectivity policies may kick in and then there is the overall backhaul capacity.

I'll download it and then probably need to come back to ask what it suggests I can do to improve things. I have never 'tweaked' the Huawei and was wondering whether it could be forced to be more effective at those times.

Thanks

@tony,
Intended only to provide a little bit more information.

You can lock certain devices to frequency band(s) etc, but you can't then just walk away and leave it. It comes with a burden of ongoing support. Loads of advice on the forum though.

I personally have found that whether it's a phone or a router allowing it to use its chipset/firmware/os logic to determine the connection may be better than second guessing the changing network policies being applied by the providers which I can't get my head around and drive me mad due to, what appears to be, a lack of consistency and getting more UE specific.

I understand the problems Meatball. I wondered if my router was being directed to pick up a slower feed by Three at certain times to reduce the load. On another thread someone was grumbling that his Netgear router would not accept Smarty sims - so I am sensitive to how complicated this all is.

I was interested in Gavin's graph that is showing the same peaks and troughs as I am seeing. I'm old enough to remember in the early days of internet that many of us made a point of using it to get some speed before the Americans got out of bed and started to saturate it.

Sorry I have confused you. If using a phone for Netmonster you need to use a SIM from the same provider as the Router. As the phone will probably behave differently than the router, please ignore my advice.

Instead have you a Cell info page in the Router GUI which you can use whilst doing the speed tests? It hopefully will confirm whether your connectivity is consistent, or you are being bounced to LTE and on what band.

Tony,

I don't have this router or direct experience of the monitor etc. There must be a screen that provides more detail on the connection rather than the one provided. It shows signal strength and cell but that's about all.

Yes, always mask data that can identify if taking screen dumps or simply provide the specific detail in text.

Hoping someone else on the forum can suggest how/if you can monitor your 5G or 4G connection detail (Cell, EARFCN/NRARFCN or Bands, CA and RSRP) on the router so you can see whether it changes during periods of the day or not.

You will find a number of posts on the forum relating to LTE H-Monitor but its whether you can use it with your router. I'd search and read through them.

It definitely shows Band and provides some tools but not sure how successful it is. Others will.

I wonder if they banned speed tests would the network just work a lot better as intended? 😅 As you think the hundreds of thousands who must do this through the day, or automated systems doing this, it must pull on the network somewhat depending on where you are etc.

Thread on 27/08/20 says

"Just wanted to say it's working with my Huawei 5G CPE which is fantastic as I can lock onto the quicker mast even with 5G"

I'll have a fiddle tomorrow.
