Speedtest question

Hi,

I wonder what people on here use for accurate speed tests? speedtest.net seems to give me different results depending on what device I use for the test and obviously different servers give different results.

Is it best to use a local server or one further away but local to the POP?

What about other speedtest sites? I have tried fast.com but always find that way off what I was expecting.

Thanks.

I find https://speedof.me to be the most accurate
I don't think I'd trust it, apparently I have 296.61mbps whilst streaming from My5 on a Virgin Media M250 connection (264/26mbps, I usually only see 280mbps max on other apps).

It also says 28.82mbps upload (a maximum of 32mbps apparently), I'm not sure whether I trust it.

No, not accurate at all.

If you go to Task Manager, you can see the real bandwidth being used.

It does seem to slightly overstate it, but I had problems with Ookla and Nperf speed tests either not working or showing highly inaccurate ping times and upload speeds (compared to everything else) on heavily restricted networks like my school's wifi. I can share screen shots so you can see what I mean when I get the chance.

I go through phases of trying to drill down on speed testing and just this week have gone back to using Ookla, however, using the cli version in an lxc container to automate it etc. I use OpenWrt on my router and struggle to master the SQM to beat the bufferbloat. So having the test set up is 2 birds one stone this week so when I attempt to set up SQM again I will have some good historic data to go against! I used to think there was a big difference with web or app speedtest.net but as they report ping under load now for me, it was just my imagination. Looaaaaads of things will impact your results though, time of day is the biggest one for me! As in the hour of the day 😅, oh yeah and bufferbloat is a real issue for speed testing!

It might be doing single threaded only as Gig1 (Virgin Media) shows around 600 - 650Mbps, the same as speedtest.net on single threaded.

Edit: Actioning two tests at the same time shows around 960Mbps, which is still slower than what I get on other sites running one test.
