speedtester incorrect telephone number

ISP O2. On web page http://speedtester.bt.com/ when I enter my telephone number from my house with my internet socket reply returns "Authorisation failed incorrect telephone number" for the telephone line.

Contacted BT to check phone line and number BT reported all was OK “contact ISP”.

Contacted O2 who said the web page was invalid as they could not access it from their computers therefore not their problem.

Any line issues should be directed to BT. Contacted BT who promptly guided me back to ISP as I have con BB contract with BT.

Trawled through Google I appear to be unique?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Just tested with a different number from my area code and it works with a known incorrect number??

how long have you had the number? sometimes it takes a few weeks to reach BTs database which can maybe explain the issues.

If you're on an unbundled (LLU) O2 line then some of BT's speedtester stuff won't work because your line will no longer be directly managed by them and that page is more for people using BT's own wholesale lines (IPStream, MAX, WBC etc.). At least I think that's the case, it's been awhile since I tried it.

that would also make sense too.

Ive just tried myself out of curiosity, and got the same result as the OP "Authorisation failed incorrect telephone number", and im on UKonline ( easynet ) so im asuming that its the LLU aspect, since its always worked before till I changed Isp.

Yes the BT speed tester will not work of your line is no longer attached to BT's equipment in the exchange.

I've had the number for about 15 yrs. According to SamKnows http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/SWCXX and O2 the line has not been LLUd. TalkTalk, AOL and Orange are the only ones unbundled on my exchange??

Is O2 in bed with one of these??

Who Owns Who Now?

It does work with somebody else is telephone number on my broadband line even numbers not routed through this exchange or different area codes?

Strange but true.

Thanks for the replys.

You will need to contact 02 and ask these questions since they are not enabled at your exchange they are with BE internet who is also not enabled suprised you were accepted...

Tried that

O2 say its a BT issue,

BT say its a O2 issue,

As usual nobody will take responsibility or ownership.

Thank heavens BT gave up their monopoly and allowed everyone full access?

Turk,

Firstly forget what Samknows site says. Useful when correct, but there are far too many mistakes listed (granted it does expect source data to be correct).

What you have been told by O2 is incorrect. The BT speedtester is for BT Wholesale customers and interaction with exchange data, such as bRAS information and not a service for LLU providers.

Therefore you have find out if you have been moved away from the BT network, which I suspect you have given the generic LLU reply which your getting "Authorisation failed incorrect telephone number" or if their is a database issue with your telephone number.

If you have been moved to LLU, it's down to O2 to provide a solution for their customers to test, and not use the resources of BT who no longer service your line directly.

PS: BT never gave up their monopoly, they were forced to. Whilst it has brought more choice, it's added no end of new problems and loop holes which some companies are taking advantage of, especially slamming of lines (i won't mention names).

Paul,

Thanks for your reply.

As I said Before!

Checked with o2 I am not LLUd. In this instance Samknows appears to be correct. The speed tester does work with other peoples phone number on my line?

Your opinion of database issue with my telephone number does appear most likely.

Does anybody know of any way to test/confirm this?

Sorry the BT comment is out of frustration every ISP I have tried has informed me that virtually all faults I have had are a "BT issues". True or not, I have been unable to prove or disprove. I wish I could get hold of more information?
