split-port: why is this still a thing?

hi everyone,
I'm currently experiencing a split-port issue (from spusu to voxi - can make calls and send texts, but not receive either).
this has been going on for a couple of weeks now - raised a formal complaint but all they do is basically read the same script "our technical team are working on it, please wait 24/48/72hrs".
upon searching on the internet (social media, forums, etc) looks like the split port issue is not uncommon at all, with many threads showing for the past 10+ years.
as I'm not an expert on the mobile industry - wondered if anyone has any experience and know why this issue is still a thing of the present and it's not so infrequent.
it's really affecting people, for example I cannot receive important calls and otp texts, etc.

Mistakes and glitches happen unfortunately. There’s not much more to say than that.

Vodafone do seem to be one of the worse companies for handling it though I must say. They do tend to fob you off for quite a long time before realising it’s not going to fix itself and actually escalating it to the porting team to manually resolve. It’s as simple as requesting your old company to send your number’s records over again and then letting the routing database update overnight so all networks can see your number is now on a new network, then you’re back up and running again.

Depending upon how bad of a mess your split port is, some people find it easier to get a PAC again (if they can) and take their number back to the original provider of their numbering range. This effectively cancels all port based routing and should put everything back to normal.

thanks for your reply - in my specific case, vodafone is the original provider of my numbering range (the number is native vodafone), but still things aren't working unfortunately.
they've spent 2 weeks trying different things - replacing sim, disconnecting the number, cleansing the number, re-creating the number, they're just hopeless.
and, of course, I can't move the number away, because they can only provide the PAC via text, not over the phone.

Voxi is just a tariff that sits on top of Vodafone. I don’t understand how a split port could even happen if they are your original network. This is an odd one for sure! It would be interesting to see what’s going on behind the scenes here.

I really hope they manage to sort it out for you and your number returns to normal operation soon.

In the meantime all I can suggest is to keep the pressure on them with complaints and escalations. It wouldn’t hurt to explain the situation to Spusu as well and ask if they can see any issues on their end. But in reality there’s probably not a great deal they can do unfortunately.

I've ported numerous times. The only time I had a split port was when I moved from RWG to o2 last year - my number was originally with o2 many years ago...

thanks for sharing - how was the resolution process/timeline for you?
in my case, vodafone have just requested a new 'advance cleanse' of the number, which will take another 72h.
I've sent them a screenshot from HLR Lookup showing that the number is still with spusu.

How does that HLR Lookup work? It knows my Three IE sim is roaming

It was a nightmare trying to speak to anyone who understood the issue. o2 customer service seems to be entirely offshore and poorly trained (and I spoke to lots of them), social media team took over a week to respond and then told me to take the issue up with my old provider. o2 store staff understood but had no direct contact with anyone who could help. They told me to email the complaints resolution team. It took them 10 days to respond (they promise a response within 5 days). Was about 3 weeks before everything was fixed. Had to carry 2 phones with me, one for outgoing calls, one (with my old sim) for incoming. During the whole ordeal I never received any communication from any department on what steps were being taken or what progress was being made. I did get compensation credited to my account though which amounted to free airtime for the duration of my contract. If it wasn't for the volt benefits I would leave asap.

It's interesting how it shows my number as Not Ported. It's never been ported out as such, but it's been on 3 pay monthly, smarty and now iD.
My best guess is this is some imitating a call, or requesting the same data that would be needed to do so, and seeing where it's being directed. Since porting would require leaving Three's network, and you technically never have it's "not ported", and roaming receiving would probably require some special handling to make a call too

I’m quite a regular porter so this has happened to me I think around twice. The porting team need to negotiate it manually with the other provider when this happens and it’s not like they call each other to resolve it there and then, so it can take a week or so for them to resolve it.

It also says I apparently ported when I 100% haven't 😂

I'm interested why VM number ranges aren't just O2 ones at this point
What happens if you port a number from Three to Vodafone, then STAC your Vodafone contract? Does the number go back to Three, or will Vodafone eventually reassign it with the new customer thinking it’s a VF number?

This number has never been on Three or Vodafone???

I think the question was more a theoretical one on who reassigns a ported number once it gets ceased. Does the source network even know the service is now ended and the number can be reclaimed back to source etc.

It wasn't something specific about your service, number or problem.

The original network will get the number back once it's fully disconnected from the network that is holding the number. The original assignment of the number doesn't change.

Some networks assign a number to an account when a SIM is connected, but others seem to assign a number to a physical SIM. I ordered a Smarty SIM to test recently, and it came with an unnecessary second SIM "for a friend" in the envelope. Both SIMs had numbers (in the 07863 range, which I think was among Three's original number ranges in 2003) printed on the SIM card plastic.

It's unlikely that the second SIM is ever going to be connected or activated, so given that numbers are finite, presumably the unused number will eventually be reassigned to another SIM and sent out to someone else, but it seems like a waste of numbers.

The "for a friend" SIM actually has a really cool and easy-to-remember number, so it's a bit of a shame.

the plot thickens - vodafone have now disconnected my partially-ported in number and reverted to the temporary one.
they've set up a new port-in request for tomorrow.
