sppedtester.bt or talkbroadband ?

Could anybody explain to me the difference between these two test results ?
I have had slow connection for many days, new BT customer since 04/06.
Today is my Very Very best day.
From speedtester.bt.com
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3680 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1840 kbps

From Thinkbroadband :
Date 24/06/07 14:38:46
Speed Down 1566.03 Kbps ( 1.5 Mbps )
Speed Up 373.46 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

Date 22/06/07 22:19:13
Speed Down 266.45 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
Speed Up 369.06 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

If you try a tracert or use pingplotter you will see the different paths taken from you to the speedtesters.

In theory at least the BT test shows the capability of your connection since the testing point is close to you. Thinkbroadband or other testers like www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk show the speed of downloading a file from them. Since the traffic goes further across the network to get to them it tends to take longer and/or get stuck in a queue somewhere. That means the speed you get from them will always be less than the BT version.

I would watch this BT have had issues where people have been capped on 2000kbps (2MB) if you complete the BT speed test once every 24hours and your sync stays at the higher rate you have a profile capped at 2MB.

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

You could have a stuck profile if still 2000kbps tomorrow contact them and ask they contact BT to have the BRAS profile reset.

series of unfortunate events

I have no more internet. BT was incompetent, kept promising and nothing progressed. I cancelled all BT accounts : line rental, Brioadband and BT Fusion. I am fighting as they keep charging......
I am waiting now for Talk Talk disaster to start on the 27th. Wish me good luck!!!

Ok, here I am finally back. Haven't changed anything in my installation just cancelled BT wait one month later and Talk Talk for only 20 £ is giving me MUCHHHHHHH Fatser connection, telephon line and ulimited UK and International calls. for how long > wait and see.
I purchased by security their modem, which came with only ONE filter and no USB adapter!!!
No major issue as I could keep my Belkin and am happy with.Thank you BT you waisted one month of my work and....+ +

Tks for your interest but I invite you t read my threat about BT.
I was not patient enough and especially to scared to be stuck with them for 18 months. I cancelled everything and am now enjoying TalkTalk. WIth the same installation, it runs correctly since the begining, hopefuly for ever LOL.
I am absolutely dependent on my conncetion, I also get a Nokia 6300 from Tmobile that alows me to connect internet on the handset and the PC,

If your Talk Talk connection stays good, then you don't know how lucky you are! my neighbourrs had their BB for nearly one year and has had nothing but trouble with it, plus they keep sending wired modems instead of wireless routers. they're the worst BB with the worst techs ever.

I think the main reason they keep going is purely down to the fact the poor people keep getting talked into their cheap calls, so are then talked into free BB.

but as I've said /clarinette-good luck

I have to say that, maybe by chance, but I have received a next day delivery of their wireless modem but I do not use it. I was able to keep my Belkin and still enjoy a good connection. Maybe thanks to investment put by carphone warehouse. I can't imagine anything being worst than BT not only technically but the customer service was just waste of time and not only incompetent but no care AT ALL.
I couldn't imagine suffering 18 months like that.
