Sptiz AX (GL-X3000) on Three. No 5G.

I think a few people here have mentioned they have this modem, have any of you got this modem, on three, and have 5G working?

I have it connected to my two wideband external 2x2 antennas but no 5G. Only 4G.
If I try to lock the tower, it won't connect at all. I've tried 3Internet and three.co.uk but nada.

I have also tried the supplied antennas but same (worse, because worse signal)

I have ensured that both the cellular modem and the router itself are on the latest firmware. I've tried locking bands and towers (it can actually see 5G-NSA in the list of towers, but won't let me use it). I've tried all possible three network APNs.

Not sure what's wrong here, but i've seen a number of complaints about no 5G on this router including a reddit post for this router and three but the user never reports back if they fixed it or not.

Before I send this back, has anyone got this modem working on three and with 5G?

Ok, this will probably help, seeing as the stock firmware is just Openwrt with a proprietary overlay.

Switching the modem from pcie to usb enables 5g

Code:
Switch the modem network port between PCIe and USB interfaces:
1. Connect to the AT commands (/dev/ttyUSB2) port using
e.g. minicom: minicom -D /dev/ttyUSB2
2. Check the current modem mode with 'AT+QCFG="data_interface"':
  - 0,0 indicates that the network port uses the USB interface
  - 1,0 indicates that the network port uses the PCIe interface
3. Switch the active interface with:
  - 'AT+QCFG="data_interface",0,0' to use the USB interface
  - 'AT+QCFG="data_interface",1,0' to use the PCIe interface
4. Reboot

There's two versions of the x3000, one with a 4g cat16 modem, the other with a 5g modem, GL.inet use the same firmware for both and they ship from the same factory, so it's possible that they're setting both modems as pcie mode from factory as they don't know any different

hmm none of the commands listed work on this. and i can't seem to install them with opkg install . This is running GL.iNets firmware / build of OpenWRT. I guess I have some work to do.

I was able to run the AT command via the web GUI though, responded "OK" but still 4G. will keep at it.

rebooted the modem and it's buggered itself now  won't let me login on the web gui and if i ssh it just immediately closes the connection after putting my password in. The router is in the loft at the moment so i'll have to go try to factory reset it in the morning.

Other things that are buried:

the GL software buries the AT commands behind gl_modem:
Code:
gl_modem AT AT+QGMR
Switch the modem network port between PCIe and USB interfaces:
1. Connect to the AT commands (/dev/ttyUSB2) port using gl_modem
2. Check the current modem mode with 'gl_modem AT+QCFG="data_interface"':
  - 0,0 indicates that the network port uses the USB interface
  - 1,0 indicates that the network port uses the PCIe interface
3. Switch the active interface with:
  - 'gl_modem AT+QCFG="data_interface",0,0' to use the USB interface
  - 'gl_modem AT+QCFG="data_interface",1,0' to use the PCIe interface
4. Reboot

Took the router down from the loft. Factory reset. Keeps boot looping now :(
The only way I know to get a UART on this thing is to solder wires to headers, so I think I may have to return this.

yep found that earlier. managed to unboot loop it.
still i don't reckon im gonna mess with it much more, if it won't do 5G on the stock firmware then i think i'll just return. Thanks for the help though.

I also had this router and sent it back because I couldn't connect to 5G and didn't want to faff around with it because I'd probably break it!

Another reviewer on Amazon mentioned similar issues trying to connect to 5g on Smarty, Lebara and EE but was obvioulsy more tech savvy than me.. he did manage to flash some firmware that enabled 5G, I posted about it recently here:

yeah i've been scouting around and it does seem like this is a software issue with the GL.iNET software. As much as I love OpenWRT I actually like Gl.iNet's version of it and the Openwrt release is a snapshot (ok maybe not all bad, but snapshots aren't mainline). I've decided to return it as It won't do it at all.

Just for fun (I'm pretty sad) I took the router to a 5G pole stood within 50m of it, no 5G. Tried my Lebara SIM which does get 5G on my phone to another pole, no 5G. I shouldn't have to hack the modem to make it work.

There are similar complaints on their own manufacturer website forum, and the answers are usually always "update the firmware" but mine is up to date.

Does the Spitz AX consistently select and camp on non-5G ENDC towers?

Or instead, does the Spitz AX connect to 5G ENDC towers without establishing a 5G-NSA connection?

Quectel have really done a number on their modems.

Latest firmware for the modem is here I think:

Doesn't look that difficult

So the Amazon reviews for this are quite good, but that's probably because there's profiles for UK Vodafone and EE in the RM520 firmware:

interesting. i returned mine so i can't experiment with it any more.
but something funny just came up. I got a Gl.iNET Beryl AX a few months ago as a travel router.

Can't for the life of me get wireguard to work on it. And there are dozens of similar complaints. My love for Gl.iNET is rapidly diminishing. (The VPN config works fine on other devices, just not the Beryl AX)

@dabigm I have a Beryl AX, are you using it as the client or the server for Wireguard?

Mine connects without issue to my iONOS wireguard VPS.

client. to my wireguard on my VPS
running "sudo wg" on the server shows it's not connecting/connected

Is the Beryl AX behind something else?
