whatsapp works, facebook messenger works, signal works, telegram works, imessage works.

It's more a keep stuff ticking along as you should see what the ASDA calls and texts package does to the battery of a phone with no data, constant drain.

Wasn't sure since I've used Firsty which is 6x the speed but that was fine

I ordered this just to see what I could do with the 64kbps.

It has only been an hour or so, but it doesn't seem to be a hard speed cap. I'm streaming radio and loading this page without issues. I can download individual 3-5MB files from telegram and pictures in chats load quickly.

If you push it hard, eg, start a speed test or a 4K YouTube video, then the data connection drops for a few seconds before connecting again.

So it seems that as long you stay under a threshold of speed/time (see below), it works fine. I can even use it to make calls when my Lebara/Vodafone doesn't have signal.

So you used up the whole 1GB first, to get to the 64kbps?

Spusu deals are awesome for me, with EU roaming and international minutes, the stay connected thing is the cherry on top.

Wish they sorted out the 2fa sms issue as well as Volte.

Yes, I ran a few speedtests to use the 1GB (well, 0.66GB):

This is me doing a speed test, which breaks the data connection: https://files.catbox.moe/88alxd.mp4

And this is me scrolling a random Telegram group with lots of pictures: https://files.catbox.moe/3hpf8x.mp4

Notice that the text loads fine, same with the compressed images, but if I try to download 3MB+ files... it disconnects data for a few seconds, but only if the app downloads the file too fast.

I guess the trick is to keep the speed low cap the speeds so it doesn't trigger their threshold? Not sure if there's some app to do that.

@GavinAshford Hmm, I didn't know that, thanks.

To test the limit, I had the idea of using the phone's hotspot and then use the developer tools on a desktop browser to limit the speeds there.

After testing different values, it seems not to disconnect if I stay under ~3Mbps for download and ~8Mbps for upload:

I don't intend to abuse this, but I had to scratch this itch and know the limit

There's also an app to limit the download and upload speed: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.network.speedbooster

Would be interested to see if that also works.

What really helps when using a low bandwidth connection is using an ad blocking DNS.
I already have NextDNS running which blocks ads (although I've had to get rid of a few tracking links for mymobile2.o2.co.uk links in the O2 app to work correctly)

Android (14) has a Developer option for it.. unfortunately it applies to all networks (including Wifi)

I've never gotten that to work personally on Xiaomi or the Pixel

Nvm it does work, managed to get slO2 to act slow for once (usually it works or just doesn't)

That app allows bursts higher than the max speed I've set before brining it down, so the disconnection still happens. See the darker green line, over 10Mbps...

For some reason sometimes the speedtest app also doesn't work well with it.

I've tested the Developer Options setting Gavin mentioned and it works well, but I only have the option to cap the download speeds (which is fine, unless you're uploading stuff) and I can't select a custom speed (3Mbps), so it's either 1Mbps and leave 2Mbps unused or 5Mbps, which won't stop the disconnections.

Edit:

It usually doesn't take long for the phone to connect again and apps usually handle disconnections well - Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram - (without a VPN at least), it's still usable for things that don't need a continuous data stream.

And if you have fast speeds, the burst can be big. ~50Mbps or so in my case. If you're watching YouTube, it doesn't matter if it disconnects every 5 seconds as the app downloads a few seconds of video during the burst.

Edit 2:

A 2 way Signal video call doesn't trigger the disconnection.

Also, no issues using the Spusu data as "backup calling" for my main SIM.

I asked someone to connect to my hotspot and then use Instagram and TikTok, two apps they use a lot. Instagram didn't trigger the disconnections (more pictures than videos?), but TikTok did. They didn't notice the connection going down though, the "bursts" were enough for TikTok to work.

This is me installing an app from the Play Store. It keeps disconnecting and it's slower than usual, but it still does the job: https://files.catbox.moe/70ki88.mp4

Spusu may want to implement a proper speed cap because right now we can restrict speeds to 3Mbps and have an unlimited plan for £3 a month (assuming they don't tell us to f off  ).

I think I'll keep the plan for mapping and also as a backup for my main SIM.
