Spybot S&D

exactly, there was no announcement and I've only just found out, therefore other people may not know either.
Try to say something constructive.

OK, I will say something constructive.
There have been no RECENT announcements!

Vers 1.3 was very well publicised at the time of it's release.
It's major flaw (False positive - DSO Exploit) has also been well publicised indeed!
It's beyond me how anyone with a even a modicum of knowledge regarding system security could have missed it!

And when was that?? because I had no notice of the new version, unless it was posted while I was away; and even then it cant have been "very well" because none of my PC literate friends knew of it until I told them.
If you mean it was posted on the Spybot home page, tell me; how many programs do you run on your PC's and how often do you get to visit every single homepage on a regular basis; I last visited the Spybot homepage about 6 months ago and at that time there was nothing to say there was a newer version out or due on the main page (still isnt).
Infact the only reason I went to the homepage was because the update feature had'nt produced any updates for some time and I wanted to check out if the program was still being supported.
The same thing happened recently with Adaware, nothing was said but updates stopped working and visiting the homepage showed that a new version (SE) was out, you can find the thread about that on here from about 6 weeks ago.
And it's not just freeware that it happens with, something similar happened with an early version of Norton AV, updates crashed the program until you updated manually to the newest version.

Common sense should tell you that there's something wrong if updates fail.
Even if I wasn't "computer literate", as soon as a program that requires updates refused to download those updates, I would promptly visit the vendors site, support pages and/or forums to find out why!
Without updates, these programs are virtually useless - Perhaps worse, dangerous!

Both the Ad-Aware and Spybot support sites carried news of new releases; Ad-Aware even carried these reports within the programs own news section!
All the major ad/spy/malware forums carried this news - Some well in advance of even the betas being released.
Spybot 1.3 was released about eight months ago! I'm not going to trawl for an exact release date; if you want further info, try a Google for "Spybot 1.3 released" or similar.

I thought spybot was very well publisised when 1.3 was released around many forums and websites.

Its always worth taking a look here...

to find the latest product updates and new releases.
I got my free Panda Platinum antivirus with 1 years subscription from a link provided there.

When did the captain state that version 1.3 was recent ?

I thought he was trying to be helpful with the post :)

I missed the bit about the false dso exploit ......any more info?

My copy does this - it says there is a dso fault every time you run it.

AFAIK, telling S&D to fix it causes no problems - at least it hasn't on mine.

As far as I recall Spybot trys to set one of the security settings in My Computer Zone to disabled however it writes the wrong data type so always re-detects that the setting is invalid (enabled).

I believe the security issue that this was supposed to act as a work around for has long since been fixed by Microsoft, although tightening up Windows Security Settings certainly won't do any harm.

Just checked, it is checking download unsigned ActiveX Controls in MY Computer Zone (I normally have mine set to prompt - therefore Spybot's DSO Exploit doesn't show up)

To clarify, the spybot updates didnt fail, it just kept saying there were no new ones, Adawre failed which is why I visited the website; maybe it was advertised on spy/maleware sites, but i wouldnt call that "well advertised"; 99% of the population probably doesnt know a single such site (me included), if it's not shown on the programs main news page I probably wouldnt know, maybe they should post on here or The Register.

I did mention here http://www.ispreview.co.uk/talk/showthread.php?t=16734 that updates for ad-aware 6 were about to cease. Until Lavasaoft anounced that, it was unclear if SE 1.05 would be the finished version - previous SE versions rarely had more than one reference file update before being rapidly superceeded with new bug-fixed versions (with incompatible reference files)

Version 1.4 is on beta ATM (you can turn on beta downloads in advanced settings)

Slightly off-topic but does anyone use the professional version of Ad-Aware? Does it actually stop the wretched stuff getting onto your computer instead of having to kill it twice a week?
