Starlink current offers

Well my dishy just arrived. The box looks like someone sat on it and the dish is filthy, covered in dirt and fingerprints. The router has no protective plastic film on it, so i'm thinking this is a return / used item. I'm not sure what to do now. I could have bought a refurb if I had wanted a used one. Not sure if I should keep it or return it.
How much did you pay for it? Mine was a used unit but I paid £99 so I didn’t care. It’s been fine since day 1.

it was the costco £225 one with 2 months free. I mean it doesn't look damaged, but unless starlink factory workers are especially dirty, then someone's had their fingers all over the dish and the router. The main concern though is the box looks like it's probably been dropped or something, leading me to wonder what shape the dish is in. Given it's supposed to be new, and it's under warranty, I think i'll be asking them to exchange it but their phone lines don't open until Monday now.

Thank you for all this information. I’ve read the article and it’s fascinating but I am completely useless at doing such things so I’d definitely be sticking to the minimum diy. I do think if I go down the Starlink route I will need the Ethernet adaptor though which I think you can only order once you’ve got you router and set up an account.

dabigm, I am sorry to hear your equipment appears used; that’s awfully disappointing :-(

Oh no, that's a sorry looking box dabigm, I'd be wanting a replacement I think. :(

Wow, that’s a very good claim ; I love that…. Can you explain your thoughts a little, you too Vendikar…. I’m more than curious.

I’ve heard mixed reports re the speed going up and down as well as the ping via speed tests (I know from practice this is never the whole story). The highest speeds I’ve received via my 3 sim have not always been the most consistent when I’m gaming that’s for sure.

Hi @Powerful

I live in Hull which as you may know, has no Open reach available. I have tried the incumbent provider KCOM but although the service is ok the billing and customer service definitely isn't.

Every month I had to ring them to find out why they have charged for inclusive calls, stuff like that. It is painful being on hold for around 20 - 40 minutes each time. They got rid of their online chat service a year or so ago.

Anyway, MS3 dug up our road In November 2022 and never came back to lay the actual fibre. I have tried mobile data, although a good speed from EE and Vodafone I'm afraid it isn't reliable.

I decided to give Starlink a try and am not disappointed! I had the dish professionally installed and have seen no downtime. Speed wise Speedtest is currently reporting a download speed of 121 Mbps and an ipload of 19.7 ping is 29. It has never been under 100 for me.

nPerf reports 139 down and 10.5 up ping 35.

These results are from my iphone 12. Results on the pc seem slower but I think that is largely down to the cpu.

Hope that helps.

That has to be a second hand/ refurb dish!.

Mine came is a box with the starlink pics and all the info all imbedded all over the box.(new dish)

I was luck and got the 99 quid deal that they had last May, no way would I have risked cutting it all up if I'd paid full price.

Hi Vendikar, thank you for your insight into Starlink. It sounds like it’s been a real breath of fresh air for you. My speed was fantastic on upload and download through the sim but a whole month of 1-10mbs and dreadful ping is hard to take when your home has grown accustom to great internet. The investment over the past two years doesn’t even bare thinking about!

I’m dying to go and buy a zyxel NR5103 router to have a play with locking bands and see how I go…. Then I need pigtails for the antennae, and the sim has come apart inside my router so I’d have to order another (no doubt they’d turn this one off straight away) and that would be zero internet…But is it just throwing more money at the problem?! Probably.

At least I managed to find out my router is not at fault as my parents (next door) have the exact system and it’s behaving like for like.

I do fancy trying starlink and hoping it’s easy to start and stop the ‘subscription”.

im no longer a starlink customer. lol.
costco won't replace it( they say they can't, no stock )
they won't discount it either and I'm not willing to accept second hand equipment as new at full price.

Oh no, what a shame! :-(

I’m working on OH re the electricity costs but he says we will try another router and attempt a band lock etc to fix our troubles rather than Starlink :-(.

I’m going down the ‘soap dispenser’ route (as said by Wee Bear) !

Honestly, it's not that much to run :D 20W-50W - your TV costs more to run...

He read online it’s between £165 and £250 a year and that’s managed to put him off :-(. Whether that’s true or not I have no idea but it’s definitely put my idea out of the window at the moment.

lol where did he get that figure from?

Even at 50W 24/7 =

50/1000 * 25p kWh = 0.0125p/hr

0.0125 x 24 x 365 = £109.50 for a year, less than £10er a month.

You can configure it to power itself down all night if you want, and 50W is fairly liberal estimate, it'll be lower than that at idle, which it probably will be for 18 hours a day depending on what you're doing at home :).

You know what I have a smart plug with a power meter in it, I will get it on my Starlink and report back with typical in house power consumption for you.

Afternoon Dee Jay,

I have no idea where he got the figures from ?? I’ve asked him and he said maybe a YouTube video as that’s where he’s done a bit of research on it. He does like the idea of it the same as I do but electricity at our house is already an absolute fortune. The rubbish connection we have currently allows the Tv and Sonos to still work so he’s happy. It’s me who’s suffering with the rubbish connection issues mostly.

He did get the stuck sim in our router ‘unstuck’ yesterday by taking the back from the router it was able to be ejected - now I can buy a soap dispenser router and give it a try.

I would be interested to see the Starlink consumption for sure - thank you…. That would be helpful as well as interesting.

Yeah no worries, when I get a few I'll get it over there. Can't do it in the middle of the day as I have a home worker too and Starlink currently is our only connectivity.

are you on some long term energy fix? 25p a unit? lol

would agree as to the nature of power consumption. "Powerful" mentions the zyxel - I happen to have one here and the PSU for that is 12v / 4A, or 48W max output (plus whatever %age inefficiency). Of course it gets nowhere near that in practice.

No, I just changed tariffs with British Gas and it’s 24.85p

So initial results over a few hours: -

1709726989203.webp

It mostly reports around 42-45W and that's idle (which surprised me)

During full downloading I got it up to 60W, and when heating and downloading it will hit 90W.

I'll let it run a few days and I can gather total consumption for that period which will give you a rough daily cost.

Seems my initial 50W guess wasn't so liberal after all!

Time for some napkin math...

After 13 hours I'm coming up with 0.582kWh.

So, 0.582 / 13 * 24 = 1 day = 1.074kWh a day

1.074 * 24.85p (my rate) = £0.267/day

£0.267 * 365 days = £97.45

£97.45 / 12 months = £8.12/mo. If you can afford the £75 a month for Starlink, then the electricity cost should not be a factor, imo.

Hi Dee Jay tjhank you for these wonderful tests. You are a gem.

These are much better results than the information he managed to gather online about Starlink. I really do appreciate the effort.

With the purchase of a new router I have managed to get us back up and running although it’s been a bit of a slog. Who knows how long this will last and all this information will definitely be useful in the future for me. My parents who live next door are now really keen on getting Starlink as they do use the Internet for the business. They aren’t as much worried about speed, but when it goes off-line it causes them a whole host of problems so there are looking at Starlink at the moment. I think my stepmum is going to order it.

I would not of been confident with any of this if it wasn’t for the help of you guys. Thank you so much.
