Starlink Selling Rentals.

Starlink updated their website on Friday for UK customers, and it now shows that Starlink can be rented. Looks like this is just for the UK market.

The rental option is:

£99 activation.
£75 mo service fee
£15 mo rental.

the FAQ shows customers can cancel at any time and return the kit within 30 days.

Looks like a good option for those who wish to upgrade to the new, smaller version in the near future (FCC filings). Shame it isn’t available for the high performance terminal.

Got that as well.

I wonder if the one time activation fee of £99 you have to do every time you borrow one. I'm gonna assume yes, not mentioned in the FAQ.

FAQ:

Customers in select markets can rent Starlink for a one-time activation price and a monthly hardware rental price. Check the online ordering page for price details per country. Renting offers a flexible option to get started with Starlink internet for customers in select countries. Currently, this offer is only available in the United Kingdom. Starlink kits may only be rented for the fixed Residential service, and is not available for Business, Maritime, Mobile or RV Services.

Service is billed on a month-to-month basis and can be cancelled at any time. If cancelled, your service will remain active until the end of the payment period. If you have rented a Starlink Kit, you must return your equipment in good condition within 30 days of Service cancellation or you will be charged the full price of the kit, as described on the online order page. Starlink will issue you a return shipping label to allow you to return the Kit. [Follow instructions in Starlink’s Return Policy for returning rented Kits in the Starlink Customer Portal].

For additional questions, please see the Starlink Terms of Service.

Are you a subscriber or have you signed up to the emails?
Not a subscriber. I signed up to get one before it was released in the UK but then chickened out. This was after Openreach flat out told me in writing that they're not going to fibre up my street despite building in the town and being on the street across the road. But then Netomnia said they would be doing my street and even installed the CBT in August, so I decided not to waste my money. They continue to send me the emails.

LOL me too. The high price and some bad reviews put me off!
I’m very tempted. No chance of FTTP here for the foreseeable and Virgin is getting worse. We do have the option of FTTC but it’s not great. I’m trying to find some reviews of it with Sky Stream but there appears to be next to none.

Has anybody got this in the South Yorkshire area?
Wondering what kind of upload / download speeds I can expect?

I'm across the border in neighbouring Lincolnshire and get speeds varying wildly from 50 - 300 Mbps down and 2 - 30 Mbps up.

Overall though I've found Starlink averages around the 110-120Mbps mark for downloads and around 10-12Mbps up. I've had it 8 months now but I purchased my Starlink outright as rental wasn't an option at the time.

Even though you are in a different cell to where I am, speeds across the UK should be pretty good at the moment as there currently is plenty of capacity, whether this will change in the future, no one really knows.

If you have no other decent speed options then Starlink is currently a good last resort, my options were a FTTC line with 22 down & 4 up, poor 4G speed coverage and no FTTP available.

While I've been happy with Starlink so far, Customer Services can leave a lot to be desired.
