Starlink & T-Mobile Live Event

The Wee Bear

ULTIMATE Member
At 7:00 p.m. CT on Thursday, August 25 at Starbase, SpaceX Chief Engineer Elon and T-Mobile CEO and President Mike Sievert will provide a public update announcing how T-Mobile and SpaceX will work together to increase connectivity.

Just a wee post for any US visitors that may be around, or of course anyone else that would like to see what on earth this is all about.

Starlink and a mobile operator.

(1.00 am Friday) UK :)

I would not be at all surprised if Starlink, having seen how some other networks are preparing to offer 4G/5G mobile directly via satellite (e.g. OneWeb), may be planning to do the same with their next gen LEOs.

A couple of UK mobile operators have talked to me about this sort of solution. It's not quite ready yet, but soon.

Nice email from Starlink this morning.

Starlink is reducing your monthly service fee

Effective 24/08/2022, Starlink is reducing your monthly service fee to £75.

The price reduction factors in your local market conditions and is meant to reflect parity in purchasing power across our customers.

No action is needed from you, the price reduction will be automatically reflected on invoices generated after 24/08/2022.

Thank you for being an early customer and for your continued support of Starlink!

I believe Thales is working with Ericsson to get 5G from satellite and Vodafone is working with AST SpaceMobile to offer 5G coverage from space to areas not covered by their ground-based networks.

It will be a game changer, at least the concept is. I'm thinking primarily for for emergency services and situations.
That Facebook & Google will be now able to track us on the highest mountains and in the deepest valleys.. not a big fan of that, though.

Just think you'll be able to check-in at these remote spots and submit reviews…. Here I am at the summit of Everest - it was meh!

Definitely an emergency/contingency proposal. The significance of the announcement is the use of standard phones. It is really meant for land and sea masses without communication. However development of specific emergency devices with antenna will no doubt be developed.

Emergency Personal Locator Beacons and Satellite Messenger devices will still provide the best exclusive use in an emergency (International standards). I am assuming some form of prioritisation would be required on this proposal, first use will be messaging and the main issue may be international alignment and commercial interests.

If you know you are going very remote (as examples shown in the promotion video) a better device than your phone may be safer.
  • 1Ghz to 6 Ghz mid spectrum (subject to regulation/spectrum allocation)
  • Cell size is very large
  • 2-4 Mbps (theoretical target)
  • Max 2000 calls
  • May be a delay, especially early on, for a suitably equipped satellite to pass.
It may be using the latest techniques but it's functionality will be more 3G.

All welcome of course.

Just very low bandwidth, non-real-time to begin with as I understand it. No data and no voice etc. for a while anyway.

This must depend on constellation density, and possibly those addition ground stations which were announced a few months ago.

Despite what they say, I think we will see some handset updates to be optimised for the service.
