Good evening all, I am about sign with o2 for my internet connection. I run a business from my home although the business doesnt rely on internet it comes in handy ordering supplies informational resource ect. Net connection is mainly privat/home user, A little gaming downloads and music colaberation software (online jamming realtime). O2 offer a static ip an extra £5 on home account to have this but its free on the business account.

I have to set a domain for my buiness /www.mybusiness.com/ I will require e mail accounts for various adresses maybe 4 max /?????X4@mybusiness.com/ Will I need a static IP to do any of this. I know the support is better with business account but apart from that and free staic IP any thing else.

What would people suggest to taking account my requirements.
I must say that these forums which there are so many are truly wonderful.
Good for dodders, I`ve found so many interesting things. Oh the mind boggle
Any how My quest any help or advice would be gratfully received.

Many kind thanks to you all

Unless you're experienced with hosting a website on your own network/computer then I wouldn't recommend doing it, there are far too many security and complex setup issues and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Still, you would need a Static IP if you did choose to do that.

However, a far better choice is to buy a website hosting package from a separate business external from your ISP. We have a sister site that lists hundreds of UK hosts for comparison and review - http://www.host-review.co.uk .

Shared hosting is usually the cheapest, though you might find a VPS to be better for starting a web business. Still, Zen Internet do some pretty good shared hosting packages.

Hi OK Mark, I think I`m there with you. But just to clarify. I can buy a domain for the name i want (if available) and somebody else will have it on their server. who i will pay for some space to where i can upload my www pages. Will the just host host as I think i can manage it myself. Thats a question really for for the host. Te reason I am doing this is so that i can get a fixed email address and some space for a page that IS NOT provided to me as part of my Internet access deal from isp. The thought being that the Mail/www will remain the same regardless of whom I get my Internet from. I ask about the static ip because i`m in two on which 02 package to get Business or home. I`m thinking the home package really its a tad cheaper.

The business account only really gives me the static ip and of course extra support. But it had crossed my mind that maybe i would need static ip in order to have e mails forwarded and be able to login to the web site ........I really don't know Mark.....

So unless I have a game server or the www site is on my computer meaning my computer would always be on as if it was off so would my site be off, Correct?
and thats the only reason i would need a static Ip, Yes?

Thank you ever so much for your time, I`m sure you must think i`m a loose in the brain. to you this whole thing is probably so straight forward. Ha Ha. I`ll get there ;-)
Look I did a smiley I must be more modern than i thought aha

Best wishes

Hi Philip.

That's about it - purchase the domain name from a reputable supplier and purchase a hosting package to host the emails and website. To make it easier, if you get both from the same company you won't have to change name server addresses which can be a pain. As Mark said, take a look at http://www.host-review.co.uk to find a well-rated provider, and make sure they offer domain and hosting services.

Doing it this way you will be able to keep your email addresses and website address the same regardless of which broadband supplier you use, as these services will be hosted independently of your own home internet connection.

With regard to the static IP, the only reason you would need one of these is if you are hosting some services yourself (Game Server, Web Server, Mail Server etc). You are correct when you say that these services will cease to function when your computer is turned off. It is definitely going to be much easier if you purchase a hosting package, as already stated the security implications of running the email and website on your home PC, along with countless other variables, make it quite a daunting task!

Hope this helps.

If you want to host your own site then please be carefull and remember that security and if possible routed IP should be used. But like Mark said get a basic hosting package for like £4-5 a month and it would save a lot of hassle in the long run.
