Strange FTTC delay in Taynuilt

Hi guys,

I have been watching the FTTC roll-out in Scotland closely and noticed a strange thing in Taynuilt. Cabinet #1 there has a DSLAM counterpart which was installed a year ago now and has had a humming noise coming from it for some months indicating that equipment is installed and switched on.

However, the BT and Digital Scotland availability checkers are still saying it will be ready only within 'the next 6 months' with an ETA having been given through the grapevine as July 2015.

Is it possible that the cabinet is powered-up but fibre hasn't yet reached either it or the exchange yet? Seems strange to build and power it on so far in advance of whatever other critical link is currently holding things up.

Original ETA for this area was June 2014 so presumably someone found a gremlin somewhere. There's even planning permission granted for two new cabinets inside the grounds of the exchange for the EOs to be dealt with.

Affected postal code for your amusement: PA35 1JQ (The Visitation church is on this cab)

Best,
A

Excuse the late reply.. bank holiday etc. Usually once you see the street cabinet then the service itself shouldn't be too far behind because by then the core fibre optic cable will have already been blown into or through the area, although delays are common.

But in the case of your area, Argyll and Bute, the problem is a little bit more complex because a fair number of homes are forced to use the old fashioned Exchange Only Lines (EOL) method and that requires BTOpenreach to do some extensive and expensive network rearrangement in order to cater for local premises.

As such the delay is perhaps not all that surprising since seeing the cabinet doesn’t represent the final stage for tackling EOLs like it would in non-EOL areas. Hopefully though you’ll be able to order something in July, but there's also the possibility of further delays.

Thanks for the reply - I get the EO lines thing but this cabinet is the DSLAM 'partner' to the existing Cabinet 1 on Taynuilt exchange.

That said, the cabinet it replaces is very small, only about 3ft high and 2ft wide. I've not seen that design anywhere else. Therefore perhaps it's a small number of lines served and they'll only turn it on after the EO are dealt with.
