Strange IE problem

Hi all,

My mate has a nice new laptop running XP and IE and accesses the internet via his wireless network at home. There are other laptop using siblings who have no problems.

His problem is that a web page will load, display itself in its full glory for about half a second then the page goes blank and IE gives the message "Done" at the bottom.

It doesn't happen on all web pages, and it doesn't happen on any of the other computers, including his desktop which is new and also running XP. he's not been able to find a pattern.

Any ideas why IE would d/l a web page then instantly blank it?

Thanks

Possibly security settings on his IE or that the page can't be fully downloaded from the server, dispite appearing to have done so. You could always suggest he give firefox a trial and see how that handles the pages IE can't cope with.

He could have some irritating virus or trojan trying to re-direct the page.
Look out for a smaller ie page opening in one of the corners.

Try Spybot Search&Destroy and Adaware to check for bots

Alternatively it could be a problem with IE itself, if you have it on disk then try add/remove repair option from control panel.

Froggy you should know better :p

Tell him to use a proper browser *cough* Mozilla *cough*.

Also, if the laptop is running a firewall that includes Privacy /advert/ Web filtering (eg ZAP), try disabling these features.

Hi all,

Thanks for the resonses. I sent the link to my mate, but this is what he emailed back as the cause:

I found that there was an internet search program which had automatically installed itself on the laptop - from www.ntsearch.com. It was underlining words on any web page i went on - creating keyword links which would re-direct you to its search page.

I uninstalled it and everything seems to work fine now. I think the blank
web pages must have been a bug in the ntsearch software, so now it is gone
it seems to work fine.

thanks again

Spybot used to be good but I don't think it has been updated for several months now.

true, but it still blocks an awful lot of cr@p and it's free

I have both Sybot and Adaware - each one periodically finds stuff the other hasn't, so I'd recommend running both, since they are free.

I believe Spybot's immunise option Just sets Internet Explorer's kill bit for known spyware/adware ActiveX GUIDs ?

I've never used this option in spybot, (although I do use spybot to scan for malware along with Lavasoft's ad-aware) but I used to use this approach to stop the annoying do you want to install Gator prompts when I visited dodgy sites, unfortunately many of the spyware creators now seem to constantly add new GUIDs presumably to circumvent this.

I now use IE's Admin Approved setting to only permit ActiveX components I actually use, it should also make IE more secure without completely disabling all activeX.

As I understand it XP + SP2 IE has better options to control activex including never trusting a content/ software publisher.

it has a list of known bots that it will stop from being downloaded, the list hasnt been updated for a while but it still contains hundreds of the little buggers

its updated monthly as far as l can tell check ur version number if its not 1.3 then you need the new ver and l suggest you use the teatimer great prog as a resident registry sheald altho l do use other progs such as ad-aware, cwshredder, hijackthis, startlist, kill2me all in effect to remove or even make sure there is no crud on my sys
