Strange SkyQ issue

So got a new router and a switch, created an VLAN for IoT, however decided I wanted the SkyQ box off the main VLAN and on IoT and sort AirPlay rules to stream from main VLAN to IoT.

Main VLAN 10 (10.0.10.0/24)
IoT VLAN 20 (192.168.200.0/24)

The weird thing is, when on IoT, Sky complains not connected to internet even after a network reset which is getting all DHCP settings, NetFlix and Disney+ connect and stream so no issues SkyQ getting outbound… no restrictions outbound from IoT.

Yet Sky homepage says no internet, this shows for Sky Cinema and other Sky connected services…

If I switch it back to 10.0.10.0 main VLAN, it works fine…

Is 192.168.200.0/24 being used internally by SkyQ or something odd?

I have tried static IP, different DNS servers, none work. Monitored it through WireShark and not seeing anything odd, shutdown SkyQ box for 10 minutes by mains power…

It’s now back in Main VLAN, but it’s bothering me I can’t figure it out?

Just to add, everything else on IoT is working fine.

- Smart Heating
- TV
- Blu-ray Player
- Echo Dots
- Robert’s Radio
- Light Bulbs
- Blink Doorbell and Cameras
- Air Con

I have disabled the Wireless on the SkyQ, that shouldn’t make a difference, SkyQ is wired.

What is the gateway on VLAN 20?

Can you put a laptop on VLAN 20 to test the gateway?

Yeah tested gateway 192.168.200.1, as I said it does connect to internet through SkyQ box, as NetFlix App works fine.

So VLAN 10 has a gateway but VLAN 20 has no gateway?
Can DNS be reached via 192.168.200.1?

Could be a pain to determine what test Sky uses to confirm a connection to the internet.

So other devices on VLAN 20 work and can access the internet but not your Sky Q?
Sounds odd, can't think of a reason why one device would not work on a VLAN but others would. Usually an all or nothing type of deal. I presume all your VLANs go out via the same internet link? And the firewall rules are the same for all devices on VLAN 20?

DHCP. Does the gateway being advertised, sit within the same subnet as the IP address being allocated to the Sky Q? (Probably does because only Sky Q issue). Does Sky Q have DHCP set, or does it have an old static address? (again just starting with the basics before diving deeper). Do you have Sky multi-room. Is it the main box complaining? Or is it one of the extra boxes. If extra box. How is it connected? Wired connection or wireless? Sit in same VLAN as the main box?

To add to that. To do the different VLANs are you using wired? Not a separate Wifi per VLAN? If doing wired make sure turn off the wifi on the box. Scroll down and highlight settings (do not select) - press 0 0 1 Select and you'll get the installer menu where you can completely turn off the 5G and 2.4G wifi.

Just done to mine. Wanted to use wired for Internet connection on both boxes. Also for the multiroom feature. However, the wireless was still switched on on both boxes. Wifi turned off on both boxes now. So hopefully all using a wired connection.

Hope get to the bottom of it and let us know what the issue is.

uknowiama referring to engineering menu.

It could be the Sky Q box is persisting the old Ethernet connection. Resetting may do it but alternatively stick a WIFI AP on the end of the VLAN 20 cable and set up the Sky Q via WIFI (to prove its not the VLAN) then if successful return to an Ethernet cable and revised setting.

Note for all

How to access the Sky Q hidden engineers menu

Please follow the below instructions in quick succession with no breaks between steps.
  1. Press the ‘Home’ button on your remote control.
  2. Scroll down to ‘Settings’ and DO NOT press select.
  3. Press ‘001’.
  4. Press ‘Select’
If that doesn’t work for you, exit the menu and try again without pause between any step.

Sky Q hidden engineers menu options
Below is a break down of the options available within the Sky Q hidden engineers menu:

  1. Network
    • 2.4GHz wireless (on | off)
    • 5GHz wireless (on | off)
    • Powerline (on | off)
    • Ethernet (on | off)
    • 5GHz Wi-Fi channel width (80 MHz / ch36 | 40MHz / ch36 | 40MHz / ch44)
  2. Reset
    • Reset settings
    • Factory reset
  3. Apps
    • Refresh apps

Thanks for all the replies. Summary below.

  • SkyQ single no multi room
  • Wired only, DHCP not manual
  • Wireless disabled
  • VLAN gateway has its own address 192.168.200.1, DHCP giving correct gateway and DNS
  • No outbound filtering, only one firewall rule to stop IoT talking to Main VLAN
  • NextDNS is not blocking anything

I haven’t checked if a VLAN 20 can actually ping the gateway, I suspect this might not work as I have disabled “manage this router” on IoT network, il check this today and if that fails add a rule to allow it to ping gateway.
